One of the most compelling television events of the new year is BET’s Madiba, a definitive three-part miniseries dramatizing the inspirational life of Nelson Mandela. With Laurence Fishburne in the starring role, Madiba is based on two Mandela books, Conversations with Myself and Nelson Mandela by Himself, yielding an intimate portrait of the leader as he fought for freedom in South Africa. The Paley Center is pleased to premiere the opening episode of Madiba, with highlights from the rest of the series. This saga also pays tribute to the gallant men and women who fought alongside Mandela, including Oliver Tambo (Orlando Jones); Walter Sisulu (David Harewood), and Nelson’s second wife Winnie (Terry Pheto). Michael Nyqvist is also featured as Dr. H.F. Verwoerd, the prime minister of Apartheid-era South Africa, with Kevin Hooks helming the project, the first African-American director to tell Mandela’s story. After the screening, our panelists will talk about Mandela’s legacy and the production, which will air in February as the cornerstone of BET’s Black History Month programming.
