Summary
The 50th annual Oscar presentation, broadcast live from Hollywood. The program begins with the following: Debbie Reynolds stars in a dance production number; past Oscar winners parade on stage; Bette Davis and Gregory Peck explain voting procedures; and Hope welcomes the audience. Highlights include the following: John Travolta presents an Oscar to Vanessa Redgrave for "Julia" and Redgrave issues a political speech about Zionism; Mark Hamill awards Oscars to "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Star Wars"; Paul Williams and Jodie Foster award "Sand Castle" with an Oscar; and William Holden and Barbara Stanwyck present an award to "Star Wars." Other Oscars are presented by Joan Fontaine, Raquel Welch, Kirk Douglas.
The Oscars continue with the following: Raquel Welch and Kirk Douglas present an award for "Gravity Is My Enemy"; Billy Dee Williams presents an Oscar for Technical Achievements; Greer Garson and Henry Winkler award an Oscar to "Star Wars"; Eva Marie Saint and Jack Valenti award "Madame Rosa" with an Oscar; Maggie Smith and Michael Caine announce Best Supporting Actor Jason Robards (not present) for "Julia"; Natalie Wood presents an award to "Star Wars"; and composer John Williams receives an Oscar; Jon Voight and Goldie Hawn present an award to "Close Encounters"; Sammy Davis, Jr. awards Charlton Heston with an Oscar and performs with Marvin Hamlisch; and Olivia De Havilland awards an Oscar.
The Oscars continue with the following: Farrah Fawcett-Majors and Marcello Mastroianni present the award for the film "Star Wars"; Fred Astaire presents the award for Best Song; Stanley Kramer presents an award to Walter Mirisch, and King Vidor presents an award to Woody Allen (not present) for "Annie Hall"; Paddy Chayefsky responds to Vanessa Redgrave's comments about Zionism earlier in the program and presents awards to Woody Allen and Marshall Brickman for "Annie Hall," and to Alvin Sargent for "Julia"; Janet Gaynor presents the Best Lead Actress award to Diane Keaton for "Annie Hall"; Sylvester Stallone presents an award for "The Goodbye Girl"; and "Annie Hall" wins the Best Picture award, which is presented by Jack Nicholson.
