PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: INSIDE MEDIA: SYFY'S CAPRICA {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's Inside Media events. Held at the Paley Center in New York, this seminar celebrates "Caprica," the fantasy series prequel to “Battlestar Galactica,” set fifty-eight years earlier and focusing on the creation of the robotic Cylons by ancestors of various "Galactica" characters. The evening begins as moderator David Bushman (Paley Center television curator) offers opening comments. He then introduces Mark Stern, executive vice president of development at Syfy and co-head of content at Universal Cable Productions. Stern describes two episodes, "Ghosts in the Machine" and "End of Line," both of which are screened in their entirety.
Afterward, Bushman introduces the panelists: Stern; executive producer David Eick; executive producer and co-creator Ronald D. Moore; and cast members Sasha Roiz (Sam Adama); Esai Morales (Joseph Adama); Magda Apanowicz (Lacy Rand); and Alessandra Torresani (Zoe Graystone).
Panelists touch on such topics as: the Syfy Channel's reaction to a "Battlestar Galactica" prequel; the effort to make "a different animal" which didn't "rip off" the "Galactica" series; why "a moral ambiguity" infects all of "Caprica's" characters; the casting process; how supporting actors Roiz and Apanowicz managed to make their roles more prominent; Morales feeling that he didn't look enough like Edward James Olmos, who played William Adama on "Galactica," to win the role of William's father, Joseph; and how Torresani's lack of knowledge about "Galactica" affected her audition.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: how James Marsters was cast as the scheming Barnabas; why the storyline's "virtual world" was given a film noir look; feedback on the religious fundamentalist themes; future plot developments, and how far the story arc has been mapped out; if cast and crew members that worked on "Battlestar" made an easy transition to "Caprica"; how Morales summons intense emotions for particularly demanding scenes; and why so many of the characters smoke on the show.
(This tape includes the "Caprica" episodes "Ghosts in the Machine" (ACCNUM 101089) and "End of Line" (ACCNUM 101088). These episodes are part of the Paley collection and may be viewed separately.)
