UGLY BETTY: THE PAST PRESENTS THE FUTURE (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy-drama series about Betty Suarez, a young Queens woman trying to make it in the fashion industry despite her unglamorous appearance.

In this episode, as a favor to Daniel, Betty fills in as his receptionist, then preys on his guilt by asking him to be her date for Hilda's wedding. Daniel agrees, just as Amanda makes a dramatic entrance to gather up her belongings. As Marc quizzes Amanda about quitting her job to become a stylist, Justin pops up. He asks Marc's advice about Bobby, who saw him kissing Austin. Marc assures Justin that the Suarez family will embrace his choices. Meanwhile, Henry calls to accept Betty's invitation to Hilda's wedding, which Betty finally recalls having made when she was drunk. After telling Daniel that he'll have to bring Trista to Hilda's nuptials, Betty runs into Lindsay Dunne, who offers her a job helping him run a new magazine in London. He says he needs an answer quickly.

Elsewhere, Tyler tells Wilhelmina that he's headed to Mode to demand his portion of the company from Claire. Wilhelmina manipulates him into offering to sell his shares to her, while warning him to stop drinking. Amanda meets with her new client, soap opera actor Spencer Cannon, and when they hit it off, he becomes fearful that she knows why he's sought her out. Later Henry arrives at Mode with Nate, telling Betty that he and Charlie have separated and that he's moving back to take a job as a law firm's accountant. When Betty then makes a date with Henry, a suspicious Daniel asks if she's looking for trouble.

Trouble comes to Claire in the form of a drunken Tyler, when he confronts her about lying and then smashes up her office before threatening to confront Cal Hartley. Later, Claire is upset to learn that Daniel offered money to Tyler and is taking advice from Wilhelmina about their family dynamics. Meanwhile, Bobby spills the beans to Hilda that Justin is gay, a development that Hilda finds delightful. Back at Mode, Amanda tries to fix Marc up with Spencer. Ultimately, Marc agrees, but only upon realizing facts about himself after stopping Hilda's ill-advised coming-out party for Justin.

In the midst of a fashion shoot, Claire takes on Wilhelmina, accusing her of encouraging Tyler's ire. The pair's verbal jousting turns physical, which spills into the shoot's reflecting pool. Tempers also flare when Henry tells Betty that he didn't get the job due to Daniel's refusal to recommend him. Betty then turns on Daniel, telling him to stay out of her personal life. Later, Henry meets up with Betty and tells her that Daniel retracted his comments and the job is his. However, the two realize that the romance they once shared is over. Daniel and Trista make a similar discovery. Elsewhere, a jubilant Justin invites Austin to Hilda's wedding.

Later, Wilhelmina finds Taylor looking for drugs in her apartment. After Wilhelmina leaves, Taylor steals her gun and heads to Mode. At the wedding, Betty and Daniel both show up alone, and bond due to their loneliness. The nuptials go off without a hitch, after which Amanda introduces Mark to Spencer, Ignacio romances Elena, and Marc encourages Justin to come out. But the happiness doesn't spill into Wilhelmina's apartment, particularly when she realizes that Tyler is missing, as is her gun.

At the wedding, Justin gets caught up in the proceedings and takes to the dance floor with Austin. Across the room, Marc tells Spencer that that they aren't a good match. As they part ways, Marc sees Spencer's Tweety Bird tattoo and realizes that he's Amanda's father. Betty then surprises herself by calling Lindsay and accepting the job in London. Finally, a panicked Wilhelmina goes to Mode to warn Claire about Tyler. He then creeps up on them and waves the gun at Claire. As Wilhelmina tries to take the weapon from Tyler, the gun accidentally goes off. Includes commercials.
