HAPPY ENDINGS: THE QUICKSAND GIRLFRIEND (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about six Chicago friends trying to keep their group together after a romantic upheaval.
A group of friends, Jane, Max, Brad, and Penny, hang out after a disastrous birthday party for Penny, wherein she found out her date was actually gay. Their other two friends Dave and Alex arrive; Alex left Dave at the altar for their wedding, but they talked things over and seem to be friends again despite their lingering resentment for one another. Alex produces a birthday cake for Penny as an apology, and they share something of an impromptu celebration. That night Max and Brad take Dave out to a bar, where he meets Andrea, an attractive but obnoxious and eccentric woman he hopes to sleep with. Dave takes Brad and Max’s advice and leaves with Andrea. Jane discovers that Alex is trying to find a roommate and is concerned because Alex is a terrible judge of character, and vows to help her. Dave tells his friends about the one-night stand and decides to call back Andrea in defiance of their advice. She invites him out for breakfast and he agrees, again against everyone’s advice. He returns twelve hours later after having spent the entire day with her, and deeply regrets having done so.
Everyone tries to give Alex advice on selecting a new roommate. She finally consents to allowing Jane to help her. Penny expresses her disappointment that Max is not more of a stereotypical gay person, and so Max finds Derek, his teammate on a gay softball team, and introduces him to Penny. They get along instantly, much to Max’s chagrin. Dave becomes more entangled with Andrea, distressing Max and Brad. He admits that while he doesn’t want a relationship with Andrea he feels guilty that she thinks so highly of him and couldn’t bring himself to break up with her. They recommend that he regularly ignore her and change his plans on her to frustrate her into breaking up with him. However, this backfires when he ends up accidentally attending her birthday party with her.
Jane invites a number of roommate candidates over for an “open house,” very much without Alex’s permission. Brad advises Dave to convince Andrea that he is unreliable and a terrible boyfriend. However, his attempts again backfire due to Andrea’s various oddities. Max and Brad attend the “open house” along with Alex and Jane, expressing their distaste for the various “candidates.” Penny and Derek are in attendance as well and pester them with their banter. Alex tells Jane that she is frustrated with the roommate choices, as they would be better for Jane than for her, and wants to go with her first choice, a woman named Samantha. Alex embarrasses herself by loudly referring to the potential roommates as “boring” and “lame.” Dave becomes desperate to find a way out of his relationship with Andrea, but his luck changes when she informs him that she got a job as a backup dancer and leaves that week for a European tour. He believes that he no longer needs to be concerned with her, but she then gets accidentally struck by a passing cyclist in front of the restaurant, much to Dave’s panic.
Penny and Brad try to give Dave more advice, although Derek seems to be belittling Penny’s contributions and trying to edge her out of conversations. Dave reveals that he has asked Andrea to move in with him out of guilt while her leg is in a cast. Alex appears to be happy with her new roommate, but Jane reveals that she has secretly installed webcams in the apartment and is charging online viewers to watch both her and Alex. Penny realizes that she doesn’t actually care for Derek, and Max helps her to realize that she has no need for a “gay husband.” She ignores Max and Brad’s advice and calls up Derek, telling him simply and succinctly that they should not be friends anymore. Dave observes this and is amazed at how easily it works, inspiring him to try the same method with Andrea. However, his conversation with her is interrupted when she receives a call informing her that her grandmother has passed away. She gets Dave to attend her funeral with her, even helping her deliver the eulogy when she becomes overwhelmed with emotion. This is the final straw for him, and he breaks up with her in front of the entire funeral gathering. However, Andrea says that it was Dave who “pulled her in” and she viewed him only as a “hook-up” until he asked her to move in. It is she who ultimately breaks it off, and he agrees.
