GREY'S ANATOMY: HEART-SHAPED BOX (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, Derek and Meredith prepare for their hearing regarding Zola and Arizona informs Alex that a candidate for the pediatrics fellowship, Polly Preston, is touring the hospital. Derek and Lexie talk with a patient, Justine, a popular author with dangerous aneurysms, though she refuses to undergo surgery until she completes her latest novel. Henry watches as Teddy and Cristina perform an impressive "heart in a box" surgery, in which a donor organ is kept alive and beating through artificial means. Meredith is alarmed to learn from Bailey that George's mother is there, having had gallbladder surgery elsewhere, though Mrs. O'Malley seems pleased to see her son's old friend. Teddy instructs Cristina to "baby-sit" the heart as she works on her surgery wish list, and Derek tasks Lexie with persuading Justine to agree to her operation, though Justine declares that her duty to her characters and her readers comes first. Jackson grapples with his paranoia about Lexie and gives one of his "plastics posse" surgeries to Alex, not wanting to work alongside Mark.
Richard is unimpressed with Cristina's list and urges her to use the heart to "unlock her mind." Callie is flustered when she runs into her ex-mother-in-law and introduces Arizona to her as simply "Dr. Robbins." Mark chastises Jackson for giving up the surgery and Alex points out that Jackson is lucky to have his mentorship, and Lexie finds herself absorbed by Justine's book series. Meredith and April join Cristina and the heart for lunch, though Alex is unamused when they begin to reminisce about George. Derek is frustrated when Lexie becomes Justine's amanuensis rather than her surgeon, and Meredith finds that Mrs. O'Malley's badly-done operation requires repair. Meredith admits to Mrs. O'Malley that Callie has indeed remarried, though she offers no further details, and Richard notices Jackson sitting out of Mark's surgery and urges him to examine the heart in the box for inspiration. Mark frets to Derek that Jackson may "break up with him," and Teddy is taken aback when Henry tells her that he is considering enrolling in medical school. Lexie is upset when Justine's heroine makes a poor romantic choice, but Justine's aneurysm blows and Derek quickly takes her into surgery.
Meredith tells Bailey about her court case for Zola but states that she can handle Mrs. O'Malley's surgery, and Jackson is surprised when he too gains strange wisdom from observing the "magic 8-ball" heart. When Teddy argues that medical school is an extreme undertaking, Henry counters that he wants to make the most of life after coming so close to dying. Bailey reflects sadly on her maternal feelings for George as she works on Mrs. O'Malley, admitting that he was her favorite intern. Jackson breaks up with Lexie, telling her that he is choosing his career with Mark over her, and Richard is impressed at Cristina's revised wish list and shows her his own as the heart is taken away to be implanted. Lexie is further distraught when Justine explains her revised plans for her books, seeing the parallels with her own love triangle, and Callie nervously blurts out the truth about her marriage to Arizona to Mrs. O'Malley, who reacts with happiness at the news of Sofia. Derek tells Owen that he intends to focus on "changing people's stories" with his surgeries after the disaster with the Alzheimer's trials, and Alex is pleased to overhear Polly complaining that she has likely lost the fellowship to another doctor: him. Jackson and Mark happily renew their partnership, and Alex admits to the others that they are "all different" since the losses of George and Izzie. When Teddy arrives home, she finds Henry coughing up blood, implying that his tumors have returned. Includes commercials and promos.
