BULLWINKLE SHOW, THE: UPSIDAISIUM {EP. 55, 56} (TV)
Summary
One in this animated series about two friends – a gormless moose named Bullwinkle and an intelligent flying squirrel named Rocky -- and their frequent encounters with their arch enemies, Soviet spies Boris Badenov and Natasha. The mysterious figure from earlier, revealing himself to be Boris, hears the mines go off and assumes Rocky and Bullwinkle are dead, although they have managed to avoid the explosions. Natasha arrives to make sure Boris doesn't claim the mine all for himself. The military detects Rocky and Bullwinkle and send tanks to intercept them, literally kicking them off the base with a giant mechanical boot. They start hitchhiking to Mt. Flatten; when Boris sees them he assumes they are ghosts. Soon Rocky and Bullwinkle are picked up by a limousine, but find that they are trapped inside and the driver is a lifeless dummy. Also includes an "Aesop and Son" segment, featuring "The Mice Who Belled the Cat." It begins with a group of mice being continually ambushed and tormented by a cat. At a meeting to discuss the matter, a young mouse named Murphy devises a solution: hang a bell from the cat's neck, thus alerting the mice to his presence prematurely. The mice agree and elect Murphy to be the one to carry out the deed, much to his displeasure. His first few attempts to hang the bell around the cat's neck meet with failure, until finally he anonymously presents the bell to the cat as a gift, whereupon he puts it around his neck himself. However, this plan backfires as well and soon the cat is upon Murphy. Aesop Jr. takes away this lesson from the story: "if you play with bells, you're apt to get tolled off." In "Peabody's Improbable History," Peabody and Sherman travel back in time to the Swiss Alps on July 14th, 1865. They meet with Lord Francis Douglas preparing for his ascent of the Matterhorn, although he does not start until Sherman says "go." Sherman and Peabody watch the ascent, finding that a party of Italians is also climbing the mountain, and it is a race to the top. One of Lord Douglas's guides warns of great danger and Peabody and Sherman head up the mountain to investigate. They find Lord Douglas stopped for fear of the "Abdominal Snowman, a creature who takes delight in throwing snowballs at climbers. Peabody devises a solution by creating snowmen for a bridge game; the Abdominal Snowman joins in. They near the summit and find the Italians have given up due to a lack of rope to reach the top. Peabody improvises a coil of rope out of spaghetti brought by the Italians, and with it he, Sherman, and Lord Douglas are able to reach the peak of the Matterhorn. Other highlights include: a "Bullwinkle's Poetry Corner" featuring Ken Jacob's "Tom Tom, the Piper's Son"; and a "Mr. Know-it-All" segment about golf. This is the second of two programs on B:07980.
