PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: "IT MIGHT AS WELL BE SPRING": A SALUTE TO MARGARET WHITING {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of seminars presented by The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles. This seminar honors prolific singer Margaret Whiting. Host Rene Reyes (director of public programs, The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles) offers opening remarks before bringing moderator Michael Kerker (Director of Musical Theater and Cabaret, ASCAP) to the stage. Kerker moderates the following panelists: actress and singer Rose Marie; Deborah Whiting, Margaret Whiting's daughter; singer and former host of "Hollywood Squares" Peter Marshall; singer and songwriter Amanda McBroom; and actor Alan Oppenheimer. The panelists touch on such topics as: Deborah Whiting's recollections of growing up with her mother and her famous associates; how Whiting cultivated a love of music in her daughter, and her reaction to the rise of 1960's rock music; the Whiting family's long-standing friendship with singer and actress Sophie Tucker; Marshall's first meeting with and his observations on Whiting's musical style; her long association with songwriter Johnny Mercer; Marie's musical work with Whiting, particularly in the musical revue "4 Girls 4," along with Whiting and singers Rosemary Clooney and Helen O'Connell; Oppenheimer's work with Whiting and her theatrical work; and Whiting's role in her later years as a mentor to young singers and songwriters, including McBroom. Questions from the audience lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: Deborah Whiting's efforts to preserve her mother's work; and Whiting's work with singers Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. Clips are interspersed throughout, including: Whiting performing "My Ideal" at a 1983 concert, and also in television appearances in 1968 and 1954; an excerpt from a 1950 episode of "Texaco Star Theater" featuring Whiting singing "Come Rain or Come Shine"; Whiting on a 1957 episode of "The Nat King Cole Show" singing "It Might as Well be Spring"; a clip from the same episode of her playing piano alongside Nat King Cole; her appearance on a 1956 episode of "The Jonathan Winters Show" singing "True Love"; he appearance on "The Colgate Comedy Hour" (1955) with Bob Hope; her appearance alongside her sister Barbara Whiting on a 1954 episode of "The Ed Sullivan Show"; 1957 excerpts from "Those Whiting Girls" (1955-1957), a sitcom starring the Whiting sisters, also featuring Mabel Albertson; her appearance on a 1970 episode of "The Ed Sullivan Show" singing "Moonlight in Vermont"; her appearance on a 1968 "Kraft Music Hall" singing "Slippin' Around" with Eddy Arnold; a 1983 clip of Whiting singing "Guilty"; her appearance on the 1997 television special "Too Marvelous for Words: the Songs of Johnny Mercer" alongside John Pizzarelli and Johnny Mathis; Whiting on "Star of the Family" (1952) with the then-infant Deborah Whiting; several clips of Whiting and Mercer including their appearance together on a 1957 episode of "The Ray Anthony Show" singing "Too Marvelous For Words" and "Blues in the Night"; Whiting being interviewed about Mercer on "Too Marvelous for Words: the Songs of Johnny Mercer" and singing "One for My Baby"; Whiting and Mercer together on "The Mike Douglas Show" (1968) singing "Baby, It's Cold Outside"; film clips from a performance of "4 Girls 4"; a clip of Whiting performing "My Favorite Year" in "Live at the Russian Tea Room" (1996); and a clip of Whiting singing "Faithfully" on "Kraft Music Hall" (1968).
