PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST 2014: VERONICA MARS REUNION {PUBLIC SHORT VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media’s 31st William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television’s creative community. This PALEYFEST 2014 seminar honors “Veronica Mars,” a drama series which follows the exploits of a seventeen-year-old assistant private investigator intent on solving the town of Neptune's mysteries while simultaneously trying to negotiate the rough-and-tumble world of high school.
Alan Sepinwall (television reviewer, HitFix) moderates the following panelists: executive producer and creator Rob Thomas; and cast members Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars), Tina Majorino (Cindy “Mac” Mackenzie), Enrico Colantoni (Keith Mars), Jason Dohring (Logan Echolls), Chris Lowell (Stosh “Piz” Piznarski), Ryan Hansen (Dick Casablancas)., Percy Daggs III (Wallace Fennel), and Francis Capra (Eli “Weevil” Navarro).
The panelists touch on such topics as: the decision to finance the “Veronica Mars” film via Kickstarter; viral marketing techniques used to promote the show long after its cancellation; the logistical problems involved with casting the film; the cast’s “effortless” process of getting back into character for the film seven years after the show’s cancellation; how the characters have changed between the series and the film; how the writing process was affected by the film’s financial backing method; the intense relationship between the cast and "Veronica Mars" fans; what factors resulted in Bell being cast in 2004 for the show's title role; and TV show cast members fearing they'd turn out to be the murderer of Lilly Kane (Amanda Seyfried) in Season One.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: the relationship between the show and the Warner Bros. executives overseeing it; a pivotal scene in the first season involving Bell and Colantoni; the themes of the show and movie in reference to parent-child relationships; the “teen noir” feel of the show; unique ways that the show spoke to its teenage audience; Hansen’s character’s unexpected longevity in the show; the possibility of “Veronica Mars” returning to television; and the potential abuse of Kickstarter-funded projects by film studios.
