GAME OF THRONES: VALAR DOHAERIS {THIRD SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The third season premiere in this dramatic fantasy series, based on the book series by George R.R. Martin, about the warring royal families of Westeros. In this episode, Sam runs from the White Walkers and finds one of his brothers dead, and Mormont and the others soon find him and head back to the Wall in order to warn the others of the deadly threat. Jon arrives at Mance's camp and is stunned to see a giant among the wildlings, and he then meets "the king beyond the Wall" and his lieutenant, Tormund Giantsbane, who are impressed that the young crow killed the formidable Qhorin. When Mance questions him, Jon states that he betrayed the Watch because he spotted a White Walker and wants to "fight for the living." At King's Landing, Tyrion is suspicious when Cersei visits him, aware that she attempted to have him killed during the battle, and she demands to know what he intends to tell Tywin, fearful that he knows her big secret. Bronn then informs Tyrion that he has been knighted and now requires a higher salary. Davos, stranded after the Blackwater battle, is rescued by the pirate Salladhor Saan, who informs him that Stannis is "a broken man" and is hiding at Dragonstone with Melisandre, and Davos begs to be taken to his king.

Robb finds Harrenhal destroyed, though Qyburn is alive among the dead Stark bannermen, and Robb orders Cat locked up, still angry about Jaime's escape. Tyrion meets with his father and demands ownership of Casterly Rock, citing his decisive actions at Blackwater, but Tywin cruelly informs him that he is still a great disappointment and is unfit to be the Lannister heir. Baelish finds Sansa and reiterates his offer to take her home to Winterfell, hinting that Arya is still alive. Ros observes the conversation and advises Shae to look out for Sansa, particularly around Baelish. Daenerys and her growing dragons sail towards Astapor to examine the famous "Unsullied" warriors, and Davos arrives at Dragonstone and finds Melisandre by Stannis' side, and she taunts Davos about the crushing Blackwater defeat, hinting that she could have prevented it and the death of his son Matthos. Davos attacks her in a rage, and Stannis orders him imprisoned. Margaery visits Flea Bottom and talks to the children orphaned by the recent battle, assuring them that she will now provide for them. Cersei is suspicious of her future daughter-in-law's charitable habits, though Margaery states that it is "their duty" as royalty to care for the poor.

In Astapor, young Missandei interprets for Daenerys as she examines the slave army, explaining that the boys are vigorously trained from a young age as well as castrated, and are extremely hardy and fearless as a result. The merchant, Kraznys mo Nakloz, insults Daenerys and Jorah in Low Valyrian as he harshly demonstrates the soldiers' stoicism, and Daenerys is angered by their inhumane treatment. Jorah urges her to buy the army, pointing out that she will treat them far more fairly. As they walk through the city, Daenerys is nearly killed by a warlock's trick, but she is saved by a mysterious man who reveals himself to be Barristan Selmy, Robert Baratheon's former Kingsguard. Having been dismissed by Joffrey, he begs to serve Daenerys as penance for betraying her father Aerys, though Jorah seems unsure of his true loyalty.
