LOOKING: LOOKING IN THE MIRROR (TV)
Summary
One in this drama series about the lives of a group of gay friends living in San Francisco.
Patrick prepares to attend a birthday party for Dom’s 40th birthday at a local park, and wants to bring Richie along so he can meet all of his friends. Richie asks how Patrick met Dom and Patrick tells him that they had a brief romantic relationship but that it was “eons ago” and they are just friends. Patrick is somewhat nervous about the party and wants it to go smoothly. Patrick accidentally refers to Richie as his “boyfriend” for the first time, and Richie seems to like the idea. Lynn introduces Dom to some of his friends in the restaurant business, and Dom explains his proposal to open his Periperi restaurant. Agustin tries to set up a photo collage based on his time with CJ but becomes frustrated when he believes that it isn’t working as intended. Dom believes his proposal may not have gone as he intended, but Lynn reassures him that he did well and that such endeavors take time and persistence. Dom is uneasy about turning 40 and talks about the potential consequences of aging in his life. Lynn believes Dom is being unnecessarily dour about it and thinks that Dom should have a more positive attitude about his birthday.
Richie tells Patrick that he genuinely wants to be his boyfriend, and gives him a traditional Mexican good luck charm to signify their relationship. Patrick is touched by this gesture and accepts. Agustin tells Frank that he invited CJ to Dom’s party, and Frank is quite interested in meeting him. Dom tells Doris about his work with Lynn, but insists that they are just friends and nothing more. She is quite surprised by this, especially given Dom’s history of casual promiscuity. Patrick and Richie arrive at the park and Patrick introduces him to Agustin, Frank, Owen, and Owen’s girlfriend Bethany. All of them are surprised to learn that Patrick and Richie are boyfriends now, although there are some initial tensions between Richie and Agustin. Doris and Dom arrive and Patrick introduces Richie to them as well. They spend time joshing around, but Patrick freezes up when he sees Kevin approaching. He goes over to explain his presence and finds that Kevin is with Jon. Kevin introduces the two of them to each other and tells Patrick that Jon has managed to move to San Francisco on a permanent basis to work for the medical staff for the San Francisco Giants. Richie comes over and meets Kevin and Jon as well, and Patrick awkwardly tries to converse with everyone.
They return to the party, and CJ arrives as Dom bashes apart a piñata made in the shape of his own head. Agustin introduces CJ to Frank, and they head off together to talk. Dom receives a delivery of flowers from Lynn, and Doris is beside herself with laughter at this. CJ and Frank seem to get along quite well. Agustin thinks that Patrick is “cruel” for allowing Richie to believe that he is his boyfriend, and Patrick criticizes Agustin for inviting CJ to the party and not telling Frank about the fact that he is still paying him. Agustin accuses Patrick of manipulating Richie and “slumming” in order to prove a point to himself and his friends. Richie walks by and eavesdrops before injecting himself into the conversation, calling out Agustin for insulting him. Agustin tries to apologize but Richie is angry at him. Patrick brings Richie away and tries to calm him down. Agustin joins CJ and Frank and feels bad about insulting Richie.
That night, Patrick and Richie leave the party and Richie decides he wants to go home, believing that Patrick is embarrassed of him, noting his behavior in front of Kevin and Jon and inability to stand up for him to Agustin. Patrick apologizes and Richie notes that he is quite serious about being Patrick’s boyfriend, feeling hurt that he doesn’t seem to reciprocate. Patrick invites Richie to accompany him to his sister’s wedding in two weeks. Richie feels that they are moving “too fast” and that he is not ready to meet Patrick’s family, but Patrick asks him to reconsider. Agustin films CJ having sex with Frank, ostensibly as part of his art project. Dom visits Lynn and they sit down to watch cartoons together. Lynn tells Dom that their deal on the restaurant didn’t go through, but proposes that the two of them try a “pop-up” campaign by taking over a restaurant for a night and demonstrating Dom’s idea in action. Lynn even agrees to front the cost for the pop-up, and Dom suddenly kisses him. However, Lynn stops him and says it would be inappropriate for them to get romantic together if they become business partners. He and Dom agree to be just friends.
