MODERN FAMILY: SPRING BREAK (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, Claire encourages Alex to accompany Haley to a music festival to take her mind off of her college-acceptance worries, and Phil is surprised when Claire attempts to give away his beloved banjo, having believed that she adored his musical "talents." Cam excitedly prepares to sing "Memory" from "Cats" at a faculty follies event, and Gloria resentfully agrees to give up her melodramatic soap operas in exchange for Jay quitting his cigar habit. Mitchell panics that Lily is having a terrible time at scout camp, while at the festival Haley decides to relax her uptight sister with a Long Island Iced Tea. Phil feels immediately "inadequate" when Luke proves to be a prodigy at the banjo as well as at the "Dunphy Tuck," a challenging trampoline maneuver, and Cam finds that another teacher, Señor Kaplan, was also planning to sing "Memory." He graciously offers to step aside, though Gloria encourages him to take some very Telemundo-like action instead.
Phil's frustration mounts when he finds a brassiere in Luke's room and then accidentally injures his son's eye with a banjo string. Cam seemingly sabotages Kaplan with scalding tea and a falling sandbag, and Kaplan asks him to take his place after all. Mitchell reminds Jay that he failed to rescue him from his own disastrous childhood camping experience, and when Phil confesses his distress at seeing his son becoming a man, Luke admits that he had the bra for "practice" and still has plenty of maturing to do. Haley learns that Alex was rejected from Harvard and comforts her embittered sister, assuring her that she will do well in life despite some natural setbacks, and Cam, anxious over the confrontation with Kaplan, performs badly onstage and is humiliated. Gloria figures out that Kaplan purposefully arranged for Cam to embarrass himself and tricks him into confessing with his microphone on, and she is satisfied when they have a very theatrical "catfight." Mitchell sneaks through the woods to Lily's campfire and realizes that she is actually enjoying herself, but the girls spot him and he is forced to tell a ghost story to cover, aided by the sudden and scary appearance of Jay. Jay admits that he too was wrong about his son's childhood wishes, and Claire attempts to console Alex when she arrives home, though learns that Haley already did a decent job of it. Finally, Phil is pleased to find that he still has one particular skill that his son does not. Commercials deleted.
