SHIELD, THE: EXTRACTION {FIFTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

One in this series about tough guy detective Vic Mackey, his family, and his coworkers.

Vic and his squad respond to a massive fistfight that has broken out at a wake. They break it up and arrest most of the people inside the funeral home. It is the latest in a series of heated physical confrontations between the neighborhood’s African-American and Latino populations, spurred by a recent unsolved gang murder. Meanwhile, new officer Tina Hanlon investigates a school shooting and accidentally contaminates the crime scene by stepping in a pool of blood in the school bathroom. Billings calls the department together for a meeting, announcing that city budget cuts will prevent them from recruiting much-needed additional officers. To that effect, experienced officers are henceforth required to perform solo patrols. These measures are met with displeasure from the assembled officers, particularly Vic, who goes on a rant about the unwillingness of the taxpayer to properly support their police system. Tina and Julien bear witness to a brutal brawl erupting in the school’s lunchroom, possibly another example of the city’s racial conflict. They do their best to break up the fighting, but they hear gunshots and are forced back by a stampede of retreating students. Vic is informed of the situation at the school and moves out with his squad to assist.

The crisis at the school escalates into a full-blown riot and Vic does his best to contain the situation. He is forced to employ a fire hose to deter a group of teens attempting to attack two victims trapped in their car. Eventually the riot is mostly quelled and numerous arrests are made. Investigations around the school begin, and Billings refuses to allow the arrested teens to go home without further evidence; he surreptitiously give Vic permission to do whatever he deems necessary in order to resolve the matter quickly. To that end, Vic interrogates a student who was found at the school with a Taser on his person. Vic tortures the student by electrocuting him with the Taser; he claims he only carried it for protection. He reveals that the riot may have been caused by the rumor that a gang of Mexicans are on a “kill clock,” i.e. that they must kill two African-Americans by the end of the night, although he does not know the exact identities of those involved or the reason why it is occurring. Vic is unsure if the rumor is true, but reports it and notes that the fear surrounding it could incite further violence. Meanwhile, Danny’s pregnancy sparks a great deal of speculation around the department about the identity of the father, even forming a betting pool revolving around it.

The officers receive word that the victim of a stabbing during the riot has just died in surgery, and they interrogate another student who was possibly involved. She capitulates and gives the name of the one she believes is responsible. Meanwhile, Aceveda goes to visit Lieutenant Jon Kavanaugh of Internal Affairs. Kavanaugh is continuing the investigation on Vic, and believes that he is close to securing evidence of his corruption. However, he asks for Aceveda’s assistance in taking down Vic, although Aceveda says he has done enough already. Kavanaugh counters that Aceveda failed to curb Vic’s activities and that he should be more “proactive” by assisting him. Kavanaugh discusses the shooting of Crowley and the rumors that Vic was responsible, tempting Aceveda with the possibility of spinning his involvement with the case against Vic to boost his political career. Aceveda recommends manipulating Lemansky’s psychology to turn him against Vic; he notes that he will do this but nothing more for Kavanaugh. He also reveals that Crowley was working with the feds to bring in Vic, and he suspects Vic had him murdered to stop him.

Vic goes to visit Emolia and Sebastian, and he asks her to check with her prison contacts about the kill clock. He recommends that she not continue as a paid informant, believing that she has been lucky so far and that it is too dangerous. She says she will think about it. Phillips calls Vic into his office and informs him that the budget cutbacks have necessitated that Vic be forced into early retirement once he hits his fifteenth year of service, which will occur in four months. Vic is upset at this, concerned about the already-understaffed police department. Vic asks Phillips to try to influence the higher-ups in the department to change their minds, but he says there is nothing he can do. Shane brings new information about the stabbing case to Vic and learns about the forced early retirement. However, Vic rips up his pension papers and claims that he will “walk out the front door before anyone pushes [him] out the back.” He asks Shane not to inform anyone of the news. Vic and the team track down Lorenzo, the suspect in the stabbing, who attempts to escape on a motorcycle but ends up crashing into a vehicle. The chase continues on foot and Lorenzo pulls a gun and shoots down a passing African-American man. He then carjacks a van to get away, and Vic commandeers a truck to chase him down. Vic manages to crash the vehicles together and he and the team finally apprehend Lorenzo.

Lorenzo is taken in to the police office, where he is interrogated along with his mother. She refuses to believe that Lorenzo is responsible for the stabbing until Vic inspects his cell phone and finds a picture of the victim’s body on it. Lorenzo suddenly vomits in the interrogation room, and Vic asks Tina to get him clean. Meanwhile, Claudette and Dutch interrogate another student whom they suspect of being the one to fire off the gunshots in the school cafeteria during the riot. They threaten to send him to juvenile detention, and he gives them the name “Evan Dane,” alias “Every Day,” another student who may be responsible for the gunshots. Tina emerges with Lorenzo from the bathroom, and he suddenly charges Claudette and attempts to bull-rush her off of a balcony. Dutch grabs him and starts choking him, nearly killing him until Vic pulls him off of Lorenzo.

Kavanaugh talks with Corrine as she drops off her kids at school. He pretends to be the parent of a new student and talks with her about the challenges of parenting, eventually asking for her phone number as a means of “reaching out” to another parent. Lorenzo is taken back to the interrogation room, where his mother hits him and screams at him for his actions. Emolia informs Vic that the kill clock may have been set by inmates at Chino, where Lorenzo’s father is serving a jail sentence. Vic slips her extra money and asks her again if she has reconsidered her work as a CI, and she says she is “still thinking.” Lorenzo is persuaded by his mother and Vic to tell them that his father was the one who started the kill clock, as his fellow inmates have threatened to kill him if it is not fulfilled. Lorenzo reveals that he agreed to do it out of concern for his little brother Cisco, who overheard his phone conversation with his father and who could potentially try to carry out the conditions of the kill clock himself. Their fears manifest when Cisco attacks a barbershop, shooting and killing a customer in the chair. Vic and his team track down Cisco and get him to surrender by promising to show a photograph of the shooting victim to his father. Cisco is wounded; the barber plunged his scissors into his shoulder during the encounter in the barbershop. He pulls it out and Vic and the team scramble to treat his now-open wound.

Claudette and Dutch interrogate Evan, who does not admit to the shooting despite Dutch’s repeated insistence. Dutch has Evan arrested for murder, even though he professes his innocence. Cisco’s life is saved by paramedics, and Vic sends Lemansky to figure out where the photos are going in the prison in order to find Lorenzo’s father and stop the kill clock. Vic visits Corrine in order to see his kids, and she is upset that he has arrived out of schedule and in violation of their custody agreement. He notes that his schedule is unpredictable and that he has had a particularly bad day, still unsettled from his encounter with Cisco. Corrine changes her mind and allows Vic to see the kids. Vic then leads his team on a visit to a convenience store to track down a teenager who assaulted Ronnie during the fight at the funeral home. They learn his identity and about where he lives, and in exchange Vic intimidates a customer into spreading word that the store is now under his protection.

Danny criticizes Tina for her attire, such as her decision to wear hoop earrings and replace her breastplate with cosmetic supplies. Tina is offended by this, but Danny accuses her of not taking her job seriously. Tina thanks Danny for “being straight” with her and for giving her some measure of support. Lemansky gets a visit from Kavanaugh, who introduces himself and arrests him. Vic, Shane, and Ronnie track down the teen who attacked Ronnie and get revenge on him by beating him in a parking garage. Kavanaugh takes Lemansky to his apartment and reveals to him that several months ago he discovered a kilogram of heroin in his car, which he and his department switched out with fake heroin; he notes that Lemansky never logged the drugs into evidence, which could make him guilty of a number of serious crimes. He tries to convince him that Vic is the one to blame for the whole incident and that he should be brought in for being “dangerous.” Commercials deleted.
