HAVES AND THE HAVE NOTS, THE: FAMILY ISSUES (TV)
Summary
One in this serialized dramatic series, based on the play by Tyler Perry, about the entanglements of the Cryer, Harrington and Young families. In this episode, Tony attends a doctor's appointment for his kidney ailment and then spots a distraught Hanna in the hospital waiting room. She coldly rebuffs his questions, but Benny's doctor then informs him both that he has taken a turn for the worse and is now brain-dead and on life support. He urges them to consider turning off the machines, but Hanna angrily declares that he is "not God" and that her son will live. Elsewhere, Katheryn wonders about Hanna's mysterious absence and Celine slyly suggests that she has resumed her heavy drinking, but Katheryn then accuses "Four" of purposefully slandering Hanna and only pretending to phone her. Celine retorts that Katheryn cannot fire her or risk her exposing the family's secrets during Jim's campaign, and Katheryn leaves an anxious message for Hanna. At school, Professor Cannon confronts Candace and asks her to stop Amanda harassing him, bribing her with a letter that will allow her to skip his course and take the bar immediately, and Candace is pleased to see that he is frightened of the consequences to his criminal actions.
Veronica and Katheryn hesitantly discuss their "family issues," both stating that their troubled sons are doing well, and are then joined by campaign manager Maggie, who questions them frankly about their families' personal lives, stating that Katheryn will have to be upfront about Wyatt's addiction issues and pretend to be happily married to Jim in public. Veronica declines to reveal the truth about Jeffery's sexuality, and she takes offense when Maggie tells her that her personal style is too "flashy" and will need to be toned down. At the hospital, Hanna visits the church and fervently prays for Benny's recovery with the aid of a nun, and when Jeffery visits Wyatt, Wyatt hesitantly admits that he wrecked Jeffery's car while intoxicated and cannot now remember where it is, prompting Jeffery to end the friendship for good. Jim finds David and demands that he contact Jeffery about the accident, but David explains that the family is currently in turmoil because of Jeffery's coming out. Jim is dismissive, pointing out that Jeffery's homosexuality was an open secret anyway, and argues that finding the fateful car is far more important.
Tony tells Hanna that they must consider letting Benny go, but Hanna guesses that he merely wants his son's kidneys for himself and furiously orders him to leave. Veronica finds David feverishly searching for the title to Jeffery's car and informs him that she has cut their son off until he "takes a look at his life," though he informs her that he cannot simply change his sexual orientation because of her disapproval. Michael visits Hanna in Benny's hospital room and offers his condolences as he asks her to attend his granddaughter Lizzie's funeral and the subsequent press conference. He expresses his rage over the hit-and-run, determined that the driver should be executed for the crime, though Hanna states that she is too focused on her son's survival to have room for anger. Tony then returns and shocks Hanna by revealing that he is pursing legal action to have Benny's life support removed, arguing that he has rights as a father. Commercials deleted.
