FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR, THE: GET A JOB (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a Philadelphia teenager living with his wealthy uncle’s family in California.

Carlton and Will attempt to shoot a commercial for a local chicken restaurant on Hilary’s set before her show. Will becomes frustrated at the demeaning nature of the shoot, involving him wearing a giant chicken costume, and walks out. He and Carlton argue before Hilary breaks up the fight. Her producer offers Will a job as an assistant talent coordinator, but Carlton attempts to claim the position for himself, sparking another argument. Carlton manages to usurp Will by citing his extensive qualifications and endearing himself to the producer. Will is upset at this and complains to Jazz. Carlton tells them that Maurice, a rising comedian, is coming to the house to speak with Carlton about possibly appearing on Hilary’s show. Will sits in on Carlton and Hilary’s meeting with Maurice, making comments to try to sabotage Carlton’s chances for success. This leads to another argument, during which Carlton makes disparaging remarks about Maurice, causing him to walk out in disgust. Will stops Maurice from leaving and convinces him to appear on Hilary’s show, on the condition to keep Carlton away from him. Hilary’s producer fires Carlton on the spot and hires Will in his place, much to Carlton’s distress.

Will’s job involves him having to entertain Maurice’s sister for the evening, and he assures Hilary that everything will go smoothly. However, things go awry when Will meets Jasmine, Maurice’s sister, who has an unsettlingly masculine appearance. They end up going to Jazz’s new club together, where Will does his best to appear genial in the face of the amorous Jasmine. When she gets too close to him, Will feigns a stomach illness as an excuse to take her back to her hotel, but he immediately returns to the club. However, he is surprised to see Ashley at the club as well, as she earlier claimed that she was going to a friend’s house to study. Ashley asks him not to tell anyone that she was there, and he reluctantly agrees, admonishing her to behave herself. Hilary and Maurice enter the club as well and Hilary spots Will there. She sends Maurice off to confront Will personally, feeling betrayed that Will “dumped” Jasmine and didn’t keep his promise to her. Will feels guilty and leaves the club in order to correct the situation. However, Will is unable to locate Jasmine, but learns from Geoffrey that she stopped by the house to drop off some soup for him, and that Carlton escorted her to the club.

Will returns to the club to search for Jasmine, but Jazz informs him that she already left. Ashley returns home in the middle of the night to find her parents asleep on the couch, and she tries to explain where she was. However, they are well aware of her deception and ground her for two weeks. Later, Will returns home and confronts Carlton about his apparent betrayal, going on a tirade about Carlton’s apparently underhanded actions. Carlton points out that Will squandered his responsibilities for his new job and feels much the way he did when Will stole it from him. Will accuses Carlton of being “selfish” by taking things even though he already “[has] everything,” but Carlton accuses Will of being a “slacker” without the dedication necessary to work for what he wants. Carlton deeply offends Will by comparing him to his father, and then reveals that he covered for Will when Jasmine came to check on him, thus preserving his job. Carlton admits that while he wanted the job, he felt Will was better suited for it. Will is touched by this gesture and thanks Carlton, apologizing for his behavior. He promises to make it up to Carlton, but soon finds that he has evened things out with Will by inviting Jasmine over with the promise of having Will take her to Santa Barbara for the weekend, much to Will’s anger. Commercials deleted.
