MURPHY BROWN: MILES AWAY {EIGHTH SEASON FINALE} (TV)

Summary

The eighth season finale in this comedy series about Murphy Brown, a high-profile, successful broadcast newswoman, and her colleagues at the news magazine "FYI."

In this episode, having quit "FYI" in protest, Murphy, Corky and Frank arrive at Jim's chaotic ICN office and decide to temporarily join his team. Back at "FYI," Miller is unconcerned to realize that they are dramatically "shorthanded"; Miles' panic increases when he is summoned to Stan Lansing's office. Stan orders Miles to replace the missing employees right away, but Miles stands up for his friends and declares that they all deserve their jobs back. At ICN, Murphy, Corky and Frank ponder their next moves and are amazed when Miles arrives to announce that all of them have been rehired and Jim's tobacco story will run after all. Their celebration is halted, however, when Miles adds that Stan, impressed with his firm-handed approach, has actually promoted him to a position in New York.

Jim makes a grand return to "FYI" with his high-strung new assistants, Laurel and Matthew. Though Murphy doubts that Miles will actually be able to bring himself to leave "FYI," he soon announces that he has taken the New York job after all and will maintain a long-distance marriage with Corky. The employees all exchange sad goodbyes with their friend, and Murphy formally "makes amends" for tormenting and challenging Miles for so long. Miles assures her that he learned a great deal from her "reign of terror" and is grateful for her wisdom and expertise. He then sadly departs "FYI" for the last time. Commercials deleted.
