PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST 2017: SCANDAL: 100th EPISODE CELEBRATION {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 34th William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This PALEYFEST 2017 seminar honors "Scandal," the drama/political thriller about the Pope & Associates crisis management firm in Washington D.C.

After a screening of the series premiere episode, "Sweet Baby" (see ACCNUM 108463) and a sizzle reel of the current season, Jesse Palmer (correspondent, "Good Morning America") moderates the following panelists: cast members Cornelius Smith Jr. (Marcus Walker), Joshua Malina (David Rosen), Darby Stanchfield (Abby Whelan), Jeff Perry (Cyrus Beene), Tony Goldwyn (President Fitzgerald ‘Fitz’ Grant), Kerry Washington (Olivia Pope), Bellamy Young (Mellie Grant), Scott Foley (Jake Ballard), Joe Morton (Rowan / Eli Pope), Guillermo Diaz (Diego 'Huck' Muñoz), Katie Lowes (Quinn Perkins), and George Newbern (Charlie).

The panelists touch on such topics as: their gratitude for the fans' weekly enthusiasm, particularly on social media, and the actors' love of live-tweeting the episodes; Lowes' amazement at the strong family vibe on set; the "insane" 100th episode, which features a "what-if" alternate reality; Goldwyn's effusive praise for "team captain" Washington; Huck's uncertain fate after being shot in the most recent episode; Abby's evolution and close friendship with Olivia; Young's desperate hopes for Mellie to finally become president; the cast's frequent shock at the surprising plot twists; Perry's views of Cyrus' complex life and belief that he did not, in fact, murder Vargas (Ricardo Chavira); Jake's mysterious nature and ambiguous loyalties; hints about a Marcus/Mellie romance; the surprising revelation about the ruthless Rowan's past love for a mysterious woman; the "nepotism" behind the casting of Zoe Perry, Jeff's real-life daughter, as Rowan's former lover, with credit to Perry's wife, casting director Linda Lowy; Malina's hints about "getting in trouble" with the bosses for his mischievous antics; his pride at David's manipulative path to becoming U.S. Attorney General; the romance between "weird, maladjusted assassins" Quinn and Charlie; their hopes for the show's great longevity; Smith Jr.'s fond memories of shooting a powerful scene with Washington on his real-life birthday; Malina's relief at learning that his character was not killed in a cliffhanger shoot-out scene; Goldwyn and Washington's memories of filming on the night of the 2012 Presidential Election; Washington's joy at celebrating the birth of her first child with her female co-stars; the death of Harrison (Columbus Short) and his tragic funeral scene; Foley and Washington's excitement at getting to travel in the private Disney plane to film scenes in the Bahamas; and the actors' weekly "watch parties" at Perry's home.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics, among others: Goldwyn's sense of the importance of encouraging kids' passions, particularly in the arts; and what Washington has learned from playing Olivia.
