PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST FALL PREVIEWS 2018: NETFLIX: BOJACK HORSEMAN {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 2018 Fall Preview PALEYFEST events in Los Angeles. This evening celebrates "BoJack Horseman," the animated comedy series, set in an alternate world of talking animals, about a washed-up actor attempting to make a Hollywood comeback.
After a screening of the fifth season premiere (for synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 134046), host Rene Reyes (executive in charge of production, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks and introduces Ben Travers (television critic, IndieWire). Travers moderates the following panelists: executive producer/creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg; production designer Lisa Hanawalt; supervising director Mike Hollingsworth; and cast members Aaron Paul (Todd Chavez), Alison Brie (Diane Nguyen), and Paul F. Tompkins (Mr. Peanutbutter).
The panelists touch on such topics as: ending season four on a "hopeful note," to the disappointment of some viewers; why the characters will not necessarily stay happy throughout season five; BoJack's discomfort at playing a character similar to himself, with comparisons to Jon Hamm's role as Don Draper on "Mad Men," which also starred Brie; how the actors are personally "affected" by their characters, including Paul's love of Todd's "dreamer" qualities and Tompkins' appreciation for Mr. Peanutbutter's cheery optimism; the surprising and possibly fake story behind Brie's other character Vincent Adultman (really three children sitting on one another's shoulders); Brie and Tompkins' thoughts on their characters' amicable divorce; the awkward experience of vocalizing sex scenes, including Bob-Waksberg's story of a deleted scene involving real-life married actors; Hanawalt's excitement over Diane's recent haircut and the challenges of animating the character with a different look; Hollingsworth's "wall of Post-Its" with a variety of animal-themed joke ideas; his research into unusual creatures, such as the aye-aye lemur, and Hanawalt's encyclopedic knowledge of horses; Paul's thoughts on Todd's lack of direction; a season two joke concerning a movie about the game of tag, which then became a reality with 2018's "Tag," starring guest actor Jake Johnson; Todd's asexuality and the writers' commitment to an accurate, respectful portrayal of his identity, with comparisons to Jughead on "Riverdale"; writing actor-specific jokes for guest stars who may decline the roles, including Ralph Fiennes' refusal of a silly character that eventually went to Vincent D'Onofrio; why the writers do not yet know the show's ending and hope to continue the story for more seasons; and hints about season five's most interesting moments.
