PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST FALL PREVIEWS 2018: THE CW: ALL AMERICAN {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 2018 Fall Preview PALEYFEST events in Los Angeles. This evening celebrates "All American," a drama series, based on the life of linebacker Spencer Paysinger, which follows a South Central-based high schooler whose talents on the gridiron result in his recruitment by a Beverly Hills High football coach, in whose home he must reside to satisfy legalities.

Host Rene Reyes (executive in charge of production, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks and introduces the show's premiere, which is then screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 134121.)

After the screening, Samantha Highfill (writer, Entertainment Weekly) moderates the following panelists: executive producer/creator/writer April Blair; consulting producer Spencer Paysinger; and cast members Daniel Ezra (Spencer James), Monet Mazur (Laura Fine-Baker), Bre-Z (Tamia "Coop" Cooper), Karimah Westbrook (Grace James), Samantha Logan (Olivia Baker), Michael Evans Behling (Jordan Baker), Greta Onieogou (Layla Keating), Cody Christian (Asher Adams), and Jalyn Hall (Dillon James)

The panelists touch on such topics as: why Paysinger took Blair on a tour of his community at their first meeting; producers' decision to make Paysinger part of the ongoing creative process; ensuring that neither Beverly Hills nor Crenshaw look all-good or all-bad; Ezra's interactions with Paysinger while fleshing out the part; Paysinger's reaction to watching a dramatization of his life; the show's exploration of teenage love, jealousy, resentment, and betrayal; how the show's football scenes are choreographed; Mazur's experiences with her own teenager helping her role in the show as a mother become clear; if cast members are informed of upcoming plot developments; comparisons to TV's much-revered "Friday Night Lights" series; how using real football players on the set adds to the show's authenticity; Bre-Z's decision to pursue the role of Coop because it didn't fall into the stereotypes often depicted in LGBTQ roles; Mazur's quest to join the cast before knowing which part might be hers; and Behling and Logan's sentiments on why their own personalities are reflected in their bi-racial characters.
