MERCURY MARQUIS/SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE PARODY AD
{AUTOMOBILE ADVERTISING EXHIBITION: GREAT
DEMONSTRATIONS}
Summary
This commercial for the 1973 Mercury Marquis demonstrates that the car has an incredibly smooth ride. A diamond cutter from Cartier Jewelers successfully splits a diamond in the backseat of a Mercury Marquis, as the car is driven over a bumpy road at a speed of 35 miles per hour. Slogan (supered and in jingle): "Better ideas make better cars." Tagline: "At the sign of the cat." This commercial is one of several on this reel that invites parody, such as the following spoof from a 1978 episode of Saturday Night Live, in which a rabbi performs a circumcision in the back seat of the smooth-riding but fictitious "Royale Deluxe II."
