ADAM-12: TRAINING WHEELS (TV)

Summary

One in this series of police dramas concerning the police team of veteran Pete Malloy and Rookie Jim Reed.

LAPD officers undergo a driving refresher course and Malloy performs well on his test. He is then asked to chase another police car as part of a live demonstration. Malloy and Reed are given a special undercover assignment to investigate recent incidents of car radio and stereo theft. They, Officer Wells, and several other officers are to go undercover as bicycle-riding paperboys to inspect frequent sites of theft; Wells believes that they will have an advantage since the bicycles are quiet and able to travel on the sidewalk easily. The other officers agree with his reasoning, although they are not fond of the idea and find subtle ways to make fun of Wells throughout. They inspect a neighborhood before sunrise and find little; Malloy is accosted by a woman demanding her paper, but he refers her to Wells.

Eventually a trio of suspects is spotted infiltrating a car, and Malloy and Reed move in to investigate. The suspects try to flee when the police arrive and Reed accidentally causes their getaway truck to crash. Working together, the squad manages to apprehend all three of them. The next day, Malloy and Reed go out on patrol and pull over a van after it ignores a stop sign at a major intersection. The driver believes he is being unfairly singled out because of his long hair. They choose not to give him a ticket but discover that he is transporting a talking parakeet in the back of his van which keeps blurting out anti-police statements; he claims it belongs to a friend of his. That night they respond to a call and arrive at a car dealership. Believing that a robbery is in progress, they request backup. They attempt to cordon off the robber, but he enters a car on the showroom floor and drives it through the dealership’s glass doors, escaping into the street. Malloy and Reed give chase in their squad car. The robber eventually loses them but Wells cuts him off and he crashes the vehicle. Wells arrests the man and Malloy and Reed arrive soon thereafter. Includes commercials.
