GEORGE GOBEL SHOW, THE {PEGGY LEE, DENNIS DAY} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy/variety programs featuring comedian George Gobel. Gobel begins the show by introducing his "new Alice" played by Phyllis Avery. He continues the monologue accompanied by an old lady named "Mrs. Persimmon." He then introduces Peggy Lee singing "Fever." Gobel makes himself scarce when singer Dennis Day arrives, much to his confusion. Gobel and Avery, along with Jim Backus, perform a sketch wherein Alice uses reverse-psychology to trick him into painting the kitchen. As Day comes out again, Gobel for unknown reasons refuses to perform a secret handshake with him that they devised as children for their neighborhood club. Day sings "My Darling" and Gobel secretly admits that he is avoiding Day because he has forgotten the secret handshake. Freddy Albeck accompanies Gobel and Day in a sketch about "gentlemen's gentlemen" being stuck in an elevator, accompanied by the song "The Proper Thing to Do." Gobel continues to hide from Day. The Kids Next Door sing "Tweedlee Dee," followed by a sketch with Gobel and Day as children devising their secret handshake. They are interrupted by "Shirley" (Lee), who convinces them to allow her into their club. In the present, Gobel discovers that Mrs. Persimmon is actually Shirley, and she helps him remember the secret handshake. Thus, he is able to confront Day and they do the handshake together. The episode ends with Lee singing "Light of Love" and Gobel singing "Sweet Kentucky Babe." Includes commercials.
