CAROL BURNETT SHOW, THE {FAMILY NIGHT} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy/variety programs starring Carol Burnett. This program is a "family night" production and features no special guests.
The episode begins as Burnett takes the stage and chats with the audience about her alleged "affair" with co-star Tim Conway, her time in the "trolls" sorority at UCLA, and her famous Tarzan call. Jennifer Jones, the nine-year-old daughter of actress Susan Strasberg, presents Burnett with an award for her support of cardiac health charities.
In the first sketch, an installment of "The Family," Ed brings Eunice and Thelma to a fancy restaurant for which he has received a free pass as a mall merchant. After fighting over the seats, Thelma complains about the high prices and gets even by stealing all the sugar packets, among other "free" items. After visiting the salad bar, Ed is shocked to realize that the pass only covers two dinners, and he squirms at the thought of springing for a third meal as Eunice "accompanies" the restaurant's violinist on a song. Finally, the trio cause enough noisy trouble to get them kicked out.
Next, in an Old West saloon, a cocky bank robber strolls in with his ill-gotten gains and sits down for a game of cards before his stagecoach arrives. The elderly sheriff totters in and, apparently unaware of the criminal's presence, joins him for an extremely slow game. One of the showgirls alerts him to the robber, but by the time he manages to "draw" on the crook, the showgirl has handled the villain herself.
Next, Lawrence and Burnett portray two rivals dueling over the same guy, Lester Moore, the attractive new sheriff in town, singing "There Once Was a Man" from "The Pajama Game." Eventually, the two women pull pistols on one another — and Lester is accidentally shot dead, with the two ladies then arrested for his murder. Following this, Korman portrays a man who takes a hellish trip to the Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain plates for his new car and encounters a ruthless bureaucratic clerk who repeatedly confuses his request and gives him a series of bewildering instructions.
Finally, the Ernie Flatt Dancers perform an elaborate number. Burnett then closes the show by singing her signature good-night song. Includes commercials and promos.
