WONDER YEARS, THE: DANCE WITH ME {FIRST SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series about Kevin Arnold, a young boy growing up in the suburbs during the late 1960s, whose experiences, thoughts, and reactions are recalled by the adult Kevin, who narrates and makes wry observations throughout. In this episode, Kevin nurses a crush on classmate Lisa, encouraged by their recent conversations. As the fall dance approaches, Paul frets about asking Carla to attend with him, and Winnie seems disappointed when Kevin says that he intends to invite Lisa. In class, Kevin passes notes with Lisa and finally asks her to the dance and she agrees, but then accepts the older, cooler Brad's invitation shortly thereafter, explaining that she sees Kevin only as a "friend." Kevin broods over the rejection and asks Winnie to go with him, but she explains that she is already going with Kirk, another upperclassman. Kevin decides to forgo the dance entirely, explaining to a curious Norma that Winnie's date is a "jerk" and an inappropriate choice, but she suggests that merely attending a dance with someone is not a sign of serious interest, and he reconsiders.
After extensive preparation and some dubious dance lessons from his family members, Kevin heads to the dance with the similarly dateless Paul, and they attempt to look preoccupied while avoiding the dance floor. Paul then joins Carla, however, and begins to enjoy himself. Kevin spots Winnie with her date and attempts to make her jealous by dancing with someone else, though she does not seem to notice and is more concerned with Kirk. Outside the gym, he indulges in an "I Dream of Jeannie" fantasy about Winnie before she joins him, saying only that her date is "nice." He asks her to dance, and during the slow song he reflects on the changes in their relationship and their lives. Includes commercials.
