DICK POWELL'S ZANE GREY THEATRE: MAN FROM EVERYWHERE (TV)

Summary

One in this western anthology series hosted by Dick Powell. Powell makes introductory comments about the evolving methods of travel in the Old West.

The story opens with Tom Bowdry imprisoned for a stagecoach robbery and double murder, though he firmly denies the charges. A self-described guide, Branch Taylor, arrives in town and immediately gets into a scrap with another man, Moose. The sheriff intervenes and, having read Taylor's recommendation letter from General Custer himself, hires him to escort the wily Bowdry 90 miles to Borrego for his trial. Jenny Aldridge then attempts to hire Taylor as well, but he flirtatiously explains that he has already been engaged for a job. Taylor invites Moose to join him on the journey, but they are interrupted by the arrival of a small mob who intend to "try" and hang Bowdry on the spot as revenge for the deaths of their friends. Taylor, aware that they have already decided on his guilt – and wishing to get paid for the transportation job – tricks the men into surrendering their guns and then hurries off for Borrego with Bowdry and Moose.

Out on the road, Taylor catches Aldridge sneaking into their camp, and she explains that Bowdry also killed her brother in so-called self-defense during a card game; she wishes to witness his trial and execution. Two of Bowdry's associates then arrive and demand to know the whereabouts of the stagecoach money from the original robbery, suggesting that he is indeed guilty of the crimes for which he is to be tried. Taylor and Moose overpower the two men, killing one of them and tying up the other. In the morning, Aldridge reveals herself to be in league with Bowdry and attempts to free him, though Bowdry makes it clear that he intends to "start over again" without her, now that she has served her purpose. He shoots the traitorous cohort, but Taylor fights him and again restrains him, noting that he will now be tried for an additional murder in Borrego. Moose is annoyed to hear that the dangerous trip will not prove very profitable after all. Commercials deleted.
