ONE DAY AT A TIME: THE RUNAWAYS {PART 3 OF 4} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedies about the lives and struggles of divorcée Ann Romano and her two daughters, Julie and Barbara. Ann and Barbara are unable to sleep, as they are worried about Julie. Ann is frustrated that Julie doesn't seem to want to listen to her, while Barbara notes that it's frustrating to have a parent who encourages her children's independence but then questions their decisions. Schneider arrives under the pretense of doing maintenance work, but reports that his truck driver friends have spotted Chuck's van, much to Ann's excitement. However, it proves to be a false alarm. Ann realizes that Schneider has been up all night on the CB radio looking for Julie, and appreciates his help. He remarks that he thinks of Julie and Barbara as being like family to him. Ann is particularly worried about the other couple living in Chuck's van. Meanwhile, Julie and Chuck awaken in the van, cramped due to the presence of the other couple, Dan and Mary. They learn more about them: Mary is only sixteen years old and ran away a year ago, and met Dan in Los Angeles where he was making pornographic films. They get by mostly by begging and scamming other people, and mock Julie and Chuck's optimism. Privately, Julie says she doesn't like Dan and Mary and expresses discontentment with her and Chuck's newfound freedom. Chuck, who has just gotten a job washing cars, promises that things will get better for them soon. Unbeknownst to them, Mary and Dan plan to steal their possessions. Ann returns home from work while Barbara continues to wait for Julie. Schneider arrives to provide Ann with dinner in an attempt to cheer her up, and says they cannot wait for Julie forever. One of Schneider's trucker friends calls him on the CB radio to report that they have finally found Chuck's van. The last report indicates that it was pulled over by the state police after some sort of accident, and that they were highly resistant to arrest. The police plan to bring them home, and Ann and Barbara are overjoyed at first. However, Ann becomes extremely nervous waiting for their arrival, fearful that a mishandling of the situation will drive Julie to run away again. Chuck's parents arrive to wait for him and once again start laying blame at others for their son's departure. However, they agree with Ann that they must handle things delicately. The police arrive, but instead of Julie and Chuck they bring Mary and Dan, much to everyone's surprise. Schneider soon realizes that they stole Chuck's van, and Barbara notices that Mary is wearing Julie's necklace. Ann snaps and tries to throttle Mary, demanding to know where Julie is. Barbara calms her down and she bursts into tears. Commercials deleted. Continues in B:14731.
