BOB NEWHART SHOW, THE: SHALLOW THROAT (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy programs about the personal and professional life of a Chicago psychologist.
In this episode, Bob deals with a patient, Mr. Twillmer, who refuses to speak. Bob finally gets him to open up about his troubles, including his distaste for his job and his various bizarre fantasies. Bob feels good about getting his accomplishment and takes Emily to dinner to celebrate. However, Emily returns home in a fury since her school’s softball team suffered a terrible loss, and is in no mood to celebrate. Bob placates her and convinces her to go to dinner after all.
Elsewhere, Jerry gets several parking tickets and becomes outraged, trying to get Carol to help him write an incensed letter to city hall. Bob sees Mr. Twillmer again, who believes that his attitude and outlook has improved thanks to his sessions. He admits to Bob that he has been embezzling his company’s funds for ten years by taking advantage of his position in the company’s payroll department. He assumes that Bob will not reveal his crimes due to the policy on patient confidentiality.
Emily returns from a softball victory in a chipper mood. He tells her about Mr. Twillmer's confession without revealing his name. Bob then visits the police station, but cannot bring himself to inform them about the crime. His solution comes via charades, thus informing the officers without saying a word. However, Bob still cannot reveal Mr. Twillmer's name and decides to leave. Jerry is brought in, arrested for his failure to pay the parking tickets, but is released after paying off his debts.
Mr. Twillmer arrives for another session, informing Bob that he plans to flee the country and live in Brazil. Bob points out that he will suffer from guilt, but Mr. Twillmer appears to be unaffected. Concerned that Bob migjt still report him, he reveals that he didn’t actually take any money. He confesses that the whole thing was an elaborate test designed to see if Bob could be trusted with his “real” secret: that he is actually an extraterrestrial. Commercials deleted.
