MADELINE: THE MUSICAL {ANIMATED} (TV)
Summary
An animated musical adaptation of Ludwig Bemelman’s children’s book of the same name. The story revolves around Madeline, a little red-headed girl who lives with eleven other girls in a boarding school in Paris. Watched over by her teacher Miss Clavel, Madeline stands out from the other girls; she is totally fearless and has a highly active imagination. Every night she manages to scare the other girls with some trick, and every day she plays with animals the other girls are too frightened to go near (“I’m Madeline”). Bold, she imagines herself soaring over Paris (“Air Madeline”). One day, Madeline awakens feeling depressed, mystifying Miss Clavel and the other girls. They briefly lose track of her before finding her and bringing her back home. That night, Miss Clavel awakens with a start, having a feeling that something is amiss (“Something is Not Right”). She runs upstairs to find the other girls crowded around Madeline’s bed; Madeline is crying and they don’t know why. Miss Clavel calls a doctor, who concludes that Madeline needs an appendectomy and rushes her to the hospital. The next morning, the other girls awaken to find that Madeline has not yet returned. They grow increasingly concerned and wonder what might be wrong with her. Meanwhile, Madeline awakens after her appendectomy, recovering nicely. Madeline’s absence soon throws the other girls into disarray; their daily routine is totally disrupted. After ten days, Miss Clavel takes the girls to visit Madeline in the hospital (“Ma Cherie, Oh Madeline”). She suggests stopping off to get her a present. Eventually the girls decide to get her a stuffed tiger, reminiscent of the tiger at the zoo that Madeline is unafraid of. The girls arrive and are impressed by the many gifts Madeline received from her father. She takes the opportunity to show off her surgical scar to them (“Voila! My Scar”). Miss Clavel wakes in the middle of the night, again sensing that something is wrong. She bursts into the girls’ bedroom to find that they want their appendices removed as well. They have even drawn scars onto their stomachs. Miss Clavel, relieved and amused, goes back to sleep.
