RAWHIDE: THE CAPTAIN'S WIFE (TV)
Summary
One in this western series about the adventures of cattlemen driving herds along the Sedalia Trail, from Texas to Kansas.
In this episode, Favor and his men discover that all of their supplies have been ruined by mud, and decide to travel to the nearby Fort Tracy for provisions, despite the fact that it is native territory. In Fort Tracy, Captain Burt Holloway tells his wife Nora that he is headed out on patrol to monitor the threat of the Comancheros nearby; she encourages him to take all of his men and "wipe them out," believing it will lead to a promotion for him. Not wanting to leave the fort undefended and disinterested in a desk job, however, he refuses. As Favor and three of his men head toward Tracy, they are besieged by the Comancheros and several of their horses are stolen. A scout, Tonkin, returns to the fort with a bullet wound. Nora tends to him and he explains what happened. He says that the captain does not know the Comancheros' whereabouts, then dies of his injuries. Nora then falsely tells the men that Tonkin relayed her husband's orders to leave en masse and meet him in order to defeat the outlaws, after which they depart.
Upon arriving at Tracy, Favor is captured by a gun-toting Nora, who refuses to believe his story about merely needing supplies. The other townsfolk are convinced, however, and Nora finally admits that most of the "blue coats" are gone, prompting Favor to take charge and organize the remaining citizens. Another man, Jim, warns Nora about her dangerous actions, but she affirms that Burt will be seen as a hero. However, a young boy, Tonio, who witnessed Tonkin's last moments, reports that the dying man gave no such orders from the captain. Favor realizes Nora's trick, though she maintains that it was necessary. Favor's man Jesus bonds with the orphaned Tonio as they wait on the fort's wall for the Comancheros. When seven arrive, Favor says they are merely "testing" them, but Nora impulsively fires and kills one of the men. Favor is forced to send Jesus out to meet Burt and the troops, and Nora reaffirms that they should let Burt destroy the outlaws and land his promotion. She turns to Jim, knowing that he cares for her, for help in stopping Jesus. They ride out to meet him, but Favor, on a tip from Tonio, intervenes and takes them back to the fort.
When they arrive, they find a few townspeople dead and realize that the Comancheros beat them there, thanks to Nora's actions. Burt returns and Favor and his men prepare to leave, with Jesus promising to see Tonio again and Jim requesting to accompany them. Burt angrily confronts Nora and ends their marriage, saying that he received the promotion after all and knows that she was only after his power; when she rides out after Favor's group, she encounters the Comancheros again and exchanges gunfire with them. Favor's men find her, and she tries to entice Jim into coming with her, but he states that his love for her was like "a sickness" and refuses. She rails against their refusal to allow a woman to have real power, but when Favor orders her back to the fort with him, she collapses, having been shot, and dies in his arms, lamenting that she never found a man as upstanding as he.
