WONDER YEARS, THE: LITTLE DEBBIE (TV)
Summary
One in this series about Kevin Arnold, a young boy growing up in the suburbs during the late 1960s, whose experiences, thoughts, and reactions are recalled by the adult Kevin, who narrates and makes wry observations throughout. In this episode, Kevin deals with his "groupie," Paul's 12-year-old sister Debbie, though he is more concerned with buxom cheerleader Deena, and he and his friends make plans to attend the upcoming football game in order to admire her. Paul then learns that he must escort his sister to a cotillion dance on the same night and attempts to convince Kevin to go in his place, citing Debbie's crush on him, but he refuses, even when Paul slyly enlists Norma's help and then offers to pay him. Finally, however, Debbie herself corners Kevin and asks him to go with her, and he finds himself unable to reject her.
On the night of the game and the dance, Kevin ponders running away at the last second, but Mr. Pfeiffer sincerely tells Kevin that he trusts him with his daughter, and he realizes that he cannot bail on Debbie. He tries to make the best of the situation, and though he struggles mightily through the "sweetheart waltz," Debbie is charmed and enjoys herself. Frustrated at being "idolized," Kevin sneaks outside, where he meets up with Paul and the others, and they share their disheartening tale from the football game, at which they learned that Deena was not nearly as "mature" as she appeared after all. Debbie grows upset, believing that Kevin dislikes being with her, but he gallantly jumps into the pool to retrieve her lost earring and they share a dance and a photo, with Kevin reflecting that for now, her hero-worship of him is harmless. Commercials deleted.
