WHAT'S MY LINE? {MYSTERY GUESTS: ARNOLD PALMER; DINA MERRILL} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of panel game shows in which celebrity panelists engage in witty banter as they try to guess the unusual occupations of the guests. In this episode, host John Daly presides over a panel which includes actress Arlene Francis, actor Martin Gabel, journalist Dorothy Kilgallen and publisher Bennett Cerf. Employing only yes-or-no questions, the panel first attempts to discover the "line" of "Mr. X" from Latrobe, Pennsylvania, who is in fact famous golf champion Arnold Palmer, and the panelists, familiar with his athletic abilities, quickly guess the correct answer. Palmer briefly chats about his troubles with a "bad hole" during a recent match and explains that he learned the sport from his father, Deacon Palmer, also a notable golfer.
Next, the panelists questions Michael Jackson of Johannesburg, South Africa – coincidentally also Daly's birthplace – who now works as a rock 'n' roll disc jockey in San Francisco, and Kilgallen guesses correctly. After donning blindfolds, the panel attempts to discover the identity of this week's mystery guest, actress Dina Merrill, and Merrill's use of a disguised voice is sufficient to fool the panelists, who are unable to deduce her identity despite having met her previously. Daly notes that she has several films coming out within the year, including "BUtterfield 8" (1960), "Sundowners" (1960) and "A Matter of Conviction," later retitled "The Young Savages" (1961). Finally, the panel questions Mrs. Doris Mossotto of Trumbull, Connecticut, who is a dog-catcher (or dog "warden"), but they are unable to guess correctly before the end of the round.
