TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {DAVID STEINBERG, DREW CAREY, REGIS PHILBIN} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. His guests for this program are comedian and writer David Steinberg, comedian Drew Carey, and TV host Regis Philbin.

In his opening monologue, Carson touches upon the following topics, among others: last night's "hostile crowd"; politician Douglas Wilder's withdrawal from the presidential race; George H.W. Bush's trip to Japan with automobile executive Lee Iacocca, during which Bush infamously became ill during a state dinner; new campaign ads; the recession and rising unemployment rates; and a surprising fact about cheerleading accidents. Carson then reads out a variety of questions and comments written by audience members, ranging from scientific queries to job requests to curiosity about Carson's own "weird beliefs."

Steinberg then joins Carson and discusses his recent TV special, "David Steinberg's Biased and Insensitive Review of the Year"; the White House's reluctance to admit Bush's illness while in Japan; his "Three Stooges theory of politics," in which he compares various politicians to different members of the bumbling trio, noting that Nixon is "a bitter ex-Moe"; Russian president Boris Yeltsin's sale of nuclear arms; the "interesting algebraic problem" of basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain's shocking claim about his love life; and the recent drama film "JFK" (1991) and what Steinberg thinks about director Oliver Stone's theories of the assassination.

Next, Carey takes the stage and jokes about unpleasant winter weather in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio; some unfortunate vehicular encounters with deer; being raised by his "crazy" single mom; his unusual interpretation of "positive thinking"; the appeal of visiting Graceland; and a unique tie trick with great comic potential.

Finally, Philbin joins the host and comments on his return to L.A. after moving east to work on his nationally syndicated show; the pros and cons of being recognized by fans; his questionable on-air claims about socializing with Carson in Florida; his hopes to take over for Carson when the host departs the show later in the year, and his disappointment that comedian Jay Leno has already scored the gig; co-host Kathie Lee Gifford's frequent chat about her young son Cody; his experience wearing an "empathy belly" during Gifford's pregnancy; and an unfortunate experience while hosting a recent parade. Includes commercials and promos.
