TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {RICHARD PRYOR, RAIN PRYOR, JAKE JOHANNSEN} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are comedian Richard Pryor and his daughter, actress Rain Pryor, and comedian Jake Johanssen. In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: the latest antics of Panamanian politician Manuel Noriega; the hundredth birthday of Aunt Jemima waffles; a would-be demolition fiasco in Texas; a high-priced art auction in New York; actor Clint Eastwood's acrimonious split from partner and co-star Sondra Locke; and the ongoing ABC miniseries "War and Remembrance."
Carson performs a bit in which he displays funny old-timey photographs and describes the subjects as ancestors of various audience members, as unearthed by a genealogical research center. Pryor then sits down with Carson and discusses the following: his various nicknames; his confession about his alcohol problem on a previous show and his sobriety since then; his five ex-wives and current dating life; his recent trip to the Museum of Modern Art in New York and admiration of Van Gogh's seemingly drug-influenced work "The Starry Night"; and his longtime comedy partnership with Gene Wilder and their newest film "See No Evil, Hear No Evil" (1989), from which a clip is shown.
Next, Johanssen performs a stand-up routine in which he comments on uncomfortable contact lenses; whether a pig would make a suitable "home security precaution," as compared to a guard dog; and how the two animals compare in other, more unpleasant ways.
Rain Pryor then joins Carson and her father onstage and discusses the following topics: their family resemblance; her role in the musical "Hair" and Richard's worry that she was one of the actors appearing nude; Richard's reaction to her boyfriend Tony; her audition for "Head of the Class," at which she performed in a series of comical character personas; and her interest in securing roles through talent rather than nepotism.
Doc Severinsen and the NBC Orchestra then close the program with a musical tribute to Irving Berlin in honor of his 101st birthday. Includes commercials and promos.
