TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {DYAN CANNON, TOM SELLECK, NICK APOLLO FORTE} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. His guests for this program are actress Dyan Cannon, actor Tom Selleck, and singer/actor Nick Apollo Forte.

In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: meeting Selleck, that evening's "hunkiest guest" for the first time; the spread of the "Russian flu"; the recent Academy Awards nominations, including snubs for Barbra Streisand as Best Actress and Director of "Yentl" (1983), Clint Eastwood for Director of "Sudden Impact" (1983) and eleven nods for "Terms of Endearment" (1983); the appointment of Konstantin Chernenko, the new premier of Russia; and Joan Rivers' recent "Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year" award from Harvard University. Announcer Ed McMahon then congratulates Carson on the three Oscar nominations earned by "The Big Chill" (1983), which was produced by Carson Entertainment.

Cannon then joins Carson and chats about her French leather outfit; whether she and Carson might consider a romantic entanglement; her famously "infectious" laugh; her interest in "intellectual hunk" Albert Einstein; her four months in France filming the miniseries "Master of the Game," for which the actors had little time to rehearse; why remarrying after her 1968 divorce from actor Cary Grant has never yet "been right"; whether she tends toward jealousy in relationships, with reference to the plot of "The Big Chill"; and the difficult five-hour makeup process to transform her into the elderly version of her "Master" character Kate Blackwell, whom she portrays from age 17 to her nineties.

Next, Selleck takes the stage and discusses his challenging makeup transformation for his small role in "Coma" (1978); being rejected twice on "The Dating Game" in his college days; his many failed pilots and unsuccessful early roles, including memories of being written out of "Most Wanted" (which lasted only one season) after its 1976 pilot episode; his sense that his current successful detective series "Magnum, P.I." is really a "people show"; an embarrassing, not-so-suave incident on the set of "Lassiter" (1984), from which a clip is shown; the strange experience of watching his work in front of an audience; his reluctance to date women who are interested primarily in his fictional characters; and how his "level-headed" family keeps him grounded in the face of fame.

Finally, Forte discusses landing his role as lounge singer Lou Canova in "Broadway Danny Rose" (1984) despite having never acted before, and being only vaguely familiar with director Woody Allen; his low-key singing career prior to the film, including opening for Buddy Rich and running his own record company; and his blossoming career thanks to the movie, including his recent hiring of an agent. He also sings "Agita," as heard in the movie. Includes commercials and promos.
