TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {JAMES COCO, PATTI LABELLE, DREW BARRYMORE} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are child actress Drew Barrymore, singer Patti LaBelle and actor James Coco. In his opening monologue, Carson touches upon the following topics, among others: ideas for out-of-town visitors, including a trip to the Burbank Museum; bad restaurants and the inexplicable popularity of salad bars; the current ABC miniseries "The Last Days of Pompeii"; confirmation that Russian athletes will attend the Olympic Summer Games in Los Angeles; and the upcoming birthday of Rodolfo Alfonso Raffaello Pierre Filibert Guglielmi di Valentina d'Antonguolla – known to most as Rudolph Valentino.

Carson chats briefly with McMahon about the "Susie Award," a humanitarian prize that he and his wife Victoria are soon to receive from the Eddie Cantor Foundation. The first guest, nine-year-old Barrymore, then joins Carson onstage to discuss the following: her custom-made dress; her relief that minors such as herself do not have to pay taxes; her enjoyment of spelling lessons at school; why she enjoys acting as a craft; her fondness for stars Rob Lowe and Dudley Moore; the pressure on Hollywood actors, even children; to maintain a svelte figure; a gift for Carson, inspired by a quip of his at the Academy Awards; her newest film "Firestarter" (1984), from which a clip is shown; hints about her youthful romantic life; and a greeting to her godfather, film director Steven Spielberg, and his wife Amy Irving.

LaBelle then performs a version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from her album "I'm In Love Again." McMahon then interviews a streetwise New York-based greengrocer, "Joe Cabbagoni," played by Carson. Joe offers some helpful tips about produce and food preparation and comments on the daily challenges of a greengrocer's life, including shoplifters.

The final guest, Coco, then sits down with Carson to discuss the following: his book "The James Coco Diet," which details his considerable weight loss through healthful eating; his amusing discoveries at a Cleveland flea market, including old photographs of both Carson and himself featuring fake signatures; his experience being recognized at some inopportune moments; the importance of "asserting yourself" at restaurants when ordering special low-calorie meals; his habit of cooking healthy foods for himself; his upcoming second book, which will explore dining opportunities around the world; the "miserable" experience of being overweight and newfound contentment at a smaller size; and his plans for a videocassette version of the book. Includes commercials and promos.
