TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {ROGER MOORE, MAUREEN STAPLETON} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are actors Roger Moore and Maureen Stapleton. In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: the previous night's Academy Awards ceremony, which ran nearly three-and-a-half hours and was hosted by Carson himself; some unused jokes from the show; Barbara Stanwyck's lifetime achievement award; some surprising and not-so-surprising winners; former President Nixon's trip to Casablanca; and the televised landing of the STS-3 space shuttle.
Next, Carson and co-host Ed McMahon read out a series of interesting and obscure questions posed by telephone to librarians around the country, including the lifespan of an earthworm, the origins of diner slang, and the identity of the first automobile fatality, among others.
The first guest, Moore, takes the stage and chats with Carson about his presentation of the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to Albert R. Broccoli, one of the producers of the James Bond franchise, on the previous evening; his memories of getting to "keep" Marlon Brando's Oscar for "The Godfather" (1972) when he famously rejected the prize and sent envoy Sacheen Littlefeather in his place; his role in five Bond films so far; Carson's amusing memories of visiting Moore in France and finding him playing the record of Don Rickles' Friars' roast, featuring Carson himself; his "ribald" sense of humor and uncanny talent for regional accents; his early screen role on an episode "Robert Montgomery Presents" as a French diplomat; and whether his children intend to follow him into show business or pursue other avenues.
Stapleton then joins the other onstage and discusses her Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress for "Reds" (1981), for which she has received many calls and telegrams of congratulations; her decision to wear her borrowed dress and imitation jewelry from the ceremony onto Carson's show as well; her sense of relief at finally winning the award, having been nominated three times before; her effusive acceptance speech, in which she thanked "everyone she knows"; her admission that she has not seen any of the nominated films, including her own; Moore's suggestion that writer/director/co-star Warren Beatty, who also won Best Director, should set up a special screening of "Reds" at Stapleton's home; her discomfort with watching herself; her great love of "Gone With the Wind" (1939); and her desperation to work with actor Joel McCrea, who famously retired from films in 1976 to become a rancher. Includes commercials and promos.
