FLIP WILSON SHOW, THE {MONTY HALL; SANDY DUNCAN; WILLIAM WINDOM; THE POINTER SISTERS} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy/variety programs hosted by Flip Wilson. Guests include Sandy Duncan, William Windom, Monty Hall and The Pointer Sisters.
Wilson opens with a few jokes about a woman's attempt to contact her late husband "on the other side," after which he portrays a nervous sea captain on his first cross-Atlantic journey who encounters a confused plumber and a mother with several rambunctious children. Hall then portrays Wilson's defense attorney, who fails to get him off of a murder charge. Next, Wilson banters with the Pointer Sisters and plays a round of jump-rope before the singers perform a medley of "Old Songs," including "Swanee River," "Chattanooga" and "I Dream of Jeannie."
Next, William Windom performs "A Couple of Hamburgers," an irreverent James Thurber monologue about a husband and wife's squabbles during a road trip, including their debate over a "dog-wagon," also known a diner. Wilson, Duncan and Hall ride in on a tandem bicycle and then sing "Let's Take an Old-Fashioned Walk," and the Pointer Sisters perform the fast-paced jazz number "Cloudburst." Windom then performs "Memorial," Thurber's emotional tribute to a poodle.
Next, in a sketch parodying Hall's famous show "Let's Make a Deal," Hall selects mousy, dejected audience member Louise, played by Duncan, to compete for exciting prizes against the self-professed "best deal in town," Geraldine. Geraldine asserts that she cannot correctly guess the prices of various cleaning products, as she is not one for household chores, but she wins by default when Louise is too nervous to make a wager. Hall tries to offer Louise a reward for various common items in her purse, but she produces nothing whatsoever, unlike Geraldine, who comes up with every odd item named by Hall. When Geraldine admits she found the purse on the bus, Hall retracts her winnings, but she selects "curtain number three" and wins a motorcycle, forcing Louise to take drastic action. This asset concludes before the closing credits.
