DINAH SHORE CHEVY SHOW, THE {JANIS PAIGE, JIMMIE RODGERS, BEATRICE LILLIE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of music/variety programs hosted by Dinah Shore. In this episode, Shore sings "That Old Black Magic," followed by "It's a Most Unusual Day." She then chats with the audience and joins guest Janis Paige for a "story conference," but when Paige asks for a script and hints about the upcoming show, Shore is aloof, inviting her to lunch and telling her to just "rehearse anything." As Shore cooks, Paige sings "My Baby Just Cares For Me," and Shore encourages her to bring lunch to the writers and check in on their work. Jimmie Rodgers joins Shore onstage and admits that he is nervous, and, at her encouragement, performs "Oh-Oh, I'm Falling in Love Again." Paige rejoins them, and they decide to tackle the latest dance craze, so Rodgers sings "The Stroll" while Shore, Paige and her backup performers dance. At the end, they turn the song into a jingle for Chevrolet. Next, Shore sings "The Kerry Dance" in honor of St. Patrick's Day, and Rodgers performs "The Long, Hot Summer" from his new film of the same title. Shore then excitedly prepares for the arrival of special guest Beatrice Lillie, also known as Lady Peel, and offers her a "spot of tea." Lillie explains that in England, she had her own show very similar to Shore's in which she attempted to emulate her style, down to the NBC peacock logo, which was "spruced up" for British audiences. Lillie performs her own opening monologue and then greets a pompous British actor, played by Elliott "Ted" Reid, who demonstrates a scene from his new movie by striking a large gong. Next, Lillie recites a comedic poem and then sings "Nanette."
Reid reappears and spoofs the BBC Home Service, discussing a bird-watching guest who is unable to appear because of suspected "fowl play," as well as a strange new athletic endeavor by the Boy Scouts. He then welcomes back Lillie and her guest from "the new world," Shore, and the two of them perform a sketch in which they depict two belles in ball gowns, one rather more graceful than the other, and sing "Every Little Movement (Has a Meaning All Its Own)." Shore then performs "Bali Ha'i" from "South Pacific," joined by a young dancer. She introduces the girl as Virginia Lee, a ballet classmate of her daughter's who appeared in the stage production of "South Pacific." Lee brings out her little sister, and together they perform "Dites-Moi." Shore, Lillie and Paige retake the stage in sailor costumes and sing "Honey Bun," also from the musical, and Shore then thanks her guests and closes out the show with her signature "See the U.S.A. in Your Chevrolet." Includes commercials.
