JOHN LARROQUETTE SHOW, THE: HERE WE GO AGAIN (TV)

Summary

One in this dark comedy series about John Hemingway, a recovering alcoholic employed as the night manager of a rundown train station in St. Louis. In this episode, John floats facedown in a pool, seemingly dead, as his friends look on in surprise. Two weeks previously, John arrives at work and deals with a ceiling leak before learning that he has been asked to interview a famous author for the St. Louis Reader, and he is excited at the prospect of a byline. When he goes to the bookstore, he discovers that the author is none other than Betty White, and when she seems reluctant to give an interview, he woos her with his claims of being an animal lover too. In her hotel room, he notes her many awards and TV Guide write-ups, and she reveals that she is writing a musical based on her show "The Golden Girls" and also employs co-star Estelle Getty as a maid, having won her in a game of poker. She assures John that Rose was the true star of the show and he agrees to help with her show, although he is aware that it is terrible. At work, he enlists Catherine's help to improve the musical, unaware that Betty is scheming to make John her next husband.

Betty buys John an expensive watch and other gifts and acts jealous of Catherine's involvement, leading Dexter to compare the situation to the film "Sunset Boulevard." John seems unconcerned, however, and continues working on the musical, casting his friends as the other Golden Girls. On opening night, Rue McClanahan arrives to watch the show, but Betty locks Catherine, who is playing Dorothy, in a closet, forcing John to take on the role. The show gets underway and Rose has several solos, though Catherine escapes near the end and accuses Betty of sabotage. Later, when John questions her, she reveals her intentions for him, but he falsely claims that he has feelings for Catherine instead. She seems to accept his choice and he returns the watch, but she then pushes him into the pool that has been collecting water from the ceiling leak before hurrying off to do another TV Guide interview. Commercials deleted.
