RAWHIDE: GRANDMA'S MONEY (TV)
Summary
One in this western series about the adventures of cattlemen driving herds along the Sedalia Trail, from Texas to Kansas.
In this episode, the gang brings a cattle delivery to Colonel Agee, only to learn that he is off on his honeymoon. Rowdy heads for Indian Springs to meet him and collect the money, but along the way he spots an elderly woman whose carriage is stuck in the mud. She fires at him, but he promises to help her; she introduces herself as Abigail Briggs and explains that bandits recently tried to rob her of her life savings. Hearing that she is also headed for Indian Springs to catch a stagecoach to St. Louis to meet family, Rowdy decides to accompany her for protection. Abigail spots the bandits again and suggests that they should ride together and leave the carriage behind as bait. In Indian Springs, the sheriff tells Agee and his new bride that their robber got away and teamed up with another man along the way, revealing that Abigail is in fact the thief. The pair arrives at an inn and Abigail is upset to learn that the next coach to St. Louis is not for two days. She refuses to leave her riches in the "crackerbox" hotel safe, and Rowdy offers to get adjoining rooms so that he can keep an eye on her. He checks the door lock for safety, alarming their jumpy neighbor, Eames.
Later, Rowdy catches Abigail trying to buy her way onto another stage that departs sooner from the next town over, sternly telling her that she must not travel alone. She concedes and takes him to lunch, where she urges him to flirt with the waitress, Jane. They spot Eames winning at cards and Abigail convinces Rowdy to escort her into the saloon, where she rescues Eames from a would-be pickpocket. She urges him to hide his pocket watch under his pillow and slips him a sleeping pill; she later breaks into his room with her knitting needles to swipe the treasure. In the morning, Eames suspects Rowdy of the theft, but Abigail defends him. Rowdy decides that she should hide her "life savings" in the town bank, and she objects until she meets the kindly old guard, Pop, the father of Jane. She stealthily memorizes the combination to the safe and then persuades Rowdy to try out a healing mud bath, sneaking off to secure a spot on the stage while he is in the spa. At dinner, she again urges Rowdy to take Jane out, offering to take Pop his dinner in Jane's place. Jane and Rowdy enjoy a romantic evening while Abigail slips Pop another of her pills and cleans out the safe. The sheriff spots her outside the bank, but she claims to be taking an evening stroll. Back at the hotel, she attempts to drug Rowdy as well, but he notices the switch and convinces her to take her own "medicine."
In the morning, Pop struggles to remember what happened and the sheriff decides that Rowdy was in on it and has him arrested. Rowdy points out the so-called bandits, but then realizes that it is in fact Agee and his wife and that Abigail has planted the stolen money on him. Abigail hides when the sheriff searches her hotel room, but soon comes to the jail where Rowdy is being held. He accuses her of playing him, and she admits that she has had a hard life but is genuinely trying to reunite with her family. She asks his forgiveness and he agrees, particularly when he hears that she has confessed and returned the stolen money. Rowdy makes up with Jane, and all seems at peace – until Abigail breaks out of jail with her knitting needles and heads out of town in a stolen carriage. Includes commercials.
