FERNWOOD TONIGHT {FERNWOOD 2 NIGHT}: MISS BUN-N-RUN (TV)

Summary

One in this series of satirical, mock talk shows set in Fernwood, Ohio, hosted by the smarmy Barth Gimble and his dim-witted sidekick Jerry Hubbard.

Barth opens the show by discussing his pending whiplash lawsuit after having been "nudged" by a stranger's shopping cart. He then describes bandleader Happy Kyne's new hamburger restaurant,. He says that the eatery will be promoted in a televised commercial by "Miss Bun-N-Run," logically named teenager Patty Thomas, at whom Jerry aims a series of puns "with relish." Local disc jockey Terry Guy, who has an outrageous dress sense despite being solely a radio star, takes the stage and, unable to turn off his boisterous on-air persona, promotes his Correspondence School for the Broadcasting Arts. He explains that students' voices will be analyzed via handwriting samples and photographs to evaluate their aptitude for radio. Finally, animal advocate Connie Bushman condemns modern media portrayals of our "less-than-human friends" as dangerous villains, as in "Jaws." She notes that animals only receive "rotten parts" and non-speaking roles, to which Jerry draws a somewhat inappropriate parallel to racism. Finally, Barth allows Terry to close the show. Commercials deleted. (Martin Mull and Fred Willard reprised their roles as Barth Gimble and Jerry Hubbard in "America Tonight," telecast in syndication in 1978.)
