ELLEN: HOSPITAL (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about the quirky misadventures of a flippant Los Angeles bookstore manager named Ellen Morgan.
In this episode, Ellen rushes to the emergency room in a panic, having just learned of Laurie's car accident. Exasperated with the doctor's lack of updated information, Ellen begins chatting with a woman in the waiting room, explaining that she is worried about her girlfriend, particularly given their recent fight. The woman begins to overanalyze the relationship, suggesting that the fight is indicative of bigger problems. Ellen, though defensive, admits that Laurie is her first serious girlfriend and that she is troubled by her frequent talk of her ex, with whom she had an eleven-year relationship. The doctor then tells Ellen that Laurie is doing well. However, she unknowingly reveals that the other woman is in fact Karen, Laurie's ex, and that she accompanied her to the hospital.
Pretending not to know the truth, Ellen questions Karen about her own hospitalized loved one. Karen explains that she is waiting for news of her ex, with whom she had just shared a seemingly romantic meal at their usual restaurant. Ellen and Karen banter competitively about their "respective" girlfriends, both clearly wanting to prove that they are Laurie's preferred partner. The nurse then refuses to allow Ellen into Laurie's room, as she is not "immediate family." Karen quickly lies and claims to be her sister. Laurie's real sister Leah then arrives and angrily orders Karen to stay away from her. Ellen finally confronts Karen openly, angry at her deceptive and unkind behavior. Karen then admits that she is jealous of Laurie's new relationship, having realized that she is truly happy with Ellen. Karen quickly departs the hospital. Lois then arrives with Holly in tow, and the three of them hurry in to see Laurie. Includes commercials and promos.
