MURPHY BROWN: COME OUT, COME OUT, WHEREVER YOU ARE (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about Murphy Brown, a high-profile, successful broadcast newswoman, and her colleagues at the news magazine “FYI.”

In this episode, Murphy describes a crazy dream she had in which her pregnant form expanded to monstrous sizes and destroyed the office. Miles chimes in and tells them all about a dream he had about touring the Washington Monument with the new head of promotions, Rick, and the others point out the distinct homoeroticism of the dream. Miles is stunned, especially when he learns that Rick is in fact gay, at least according to Frank. Murphy doesn’t buy it, and the two debate over methods of deducing someone’s sexuality, aided unhelpfully by Corky. Frank adds that he thinks Rick is attracted to him, and he and Murphy make a bet on it. Later, Rick comes up to the office, and the gang subtly attempts to unearth the truth about him from his interests and style. Frank attempts to cancel the bet, but Murphy refuses. As Rick leaves, he wryly informs them that he is in fact gay, having picked up on their curiosity.

Miles begins to panic, declaring that he is sure of his heterosexuality, but ends up seeing a number of psychiatrists, all of whom attempt to analyze the dream and offer him conflicting interpretations. He tells Frank about the experience, fretting that he has never had a successful, long-term relationship with a woman and is more relaxed around men, leading Frank to experience doubts of his own. Jim arrives and states that he had his first-ever dream, although it turns out to have been both innocuous and dull. Corky offers to introduce Miles to her minister, who is also gay, suggesting that they might “hit it off” even if he cannot provide any advice. Miles finally asks Murphy her opinion point-blank, and she tells him that nothing would change if he is in fact gay. He asks her to “look sexy” in order to test his theory, but this fails. Rick soon asks Miles to lunch to discuss some promotional ideas, and Miles behaves awkwardly, attempting to avoid the meeting. Rick finally asks if Miles has a problem with his being gay, saying that he has chosen to stop hiding; Miles admits that he has had doubts about himself. Rick assures him that a dream is not a determining factor and that if Miles does not actually find himself noticing other men, he is probably not gay. Miles then confesses that Rick was the one in the dream, and Rick reacts with amusement, saying that Miles is not his type anyway. He mentions another friend who is interested in Frank, however, and is stunned to learn that Frank does not play for his team. Commercials deleted.
