CAROL BURNETT SHOW, THE {TOTIE FIELDS, KEN BERRY} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy/variety programs starring Carol Burnett. This program features special guests Totie Fields and Ken Berry.
Burnett opens the program by taking questions from the audience, including a query from the new owner of sister Chrissie Burnett's former home; why Burnett opts not to put her children on television; a request for a smooch from the host; house-cleaning advice; and Burnett's idea of "utopia." Fields briefly joins Burnett onstage and notes that, if given a choice of historical figures, she would choose to be Cleopatra.
In the first sketch, "The Old Folks," Bert is annoyed when wife Molly is "swept off her feet" by a visit from handsome Dr. Winslow. Next, Berry appears in a musical number as a military private who undergoes a stern inspection from his strict commanding officer and, upon passing, throws a wild dance party with his fellow soldiers and some attractive ladies ("Let's Have a Party"). Burnett parodies TV host Dinah Shore in "Dinah's Den," where she interview air-headed former "Miss Grapefruit" Pixie Peters and the zaftig author of "How to Become a Desirable Woman," whose wiles work only too well on Dinah's stagehands. Next, married couple Carol and Roger are visited by Roger's former college pal Barry Bromfield, who is still extremely emotional over his recent breakup with his fiancée, a trauma of which his friends keep inadvertently reminding him.
Burnett reads some funny letters from fifth-graders commenting on her "exaggerated" acting and comedy style, and then sings "Make a Rainbow." In an installment of "As the Stomach Turns," Marion tries to counsel her friend Estelle, who tearfully confesses that she has become a werewolf; they are interrupted by a visit from Marion's long-lost daughter, who announces that she has "kicked the establishment" and begun living with Native Americans. Two "men of the cloth" stop by for a chat, and Marion tries to seek their help for Estelle's unusual problem. Finally, Burnett, Berry, Fields and the regular cast members perform "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" from "Hello, Dolly!" Burnett concludes the show with her signature song, then has Berry and Fields sign her autograph book. Commercials deleted.
