LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN {CHRIS ELLIOTT, ITZHAK PERLMAN, COKIE ROBERTS} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by David Letterman. This program features comedian Chris Elliott, violinist Itzhak Perlman, and news correspondent Cokie Roberts.

In his opening monologue, Letterman touches upon the following topics: recent snowstorms; the election of New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani; basketball legend Michael Jordan's plans to join Major League Baseball; the 59th birthday of famed singer Elvis Presley; Dr. Jack Kevorkian's house arrest; and alarmingly high number of influenza patients. Next, Letterman presents an "airport quiz," featuring footage of random passengers and airline staff, followed by the "Top Ten List," this time featuring Letterman's own New Year's resolutions.

The first guest, Elliott, takes the stage and performs a brief musical number from "Cabaret," and then discusses his family life and his role in the new movie "Cabin Boy" (1994), with stage manager Biff Henderson weighing in with a "review" of the film.

Perlman and pianist Samuel Sanders then perform "Danse Espagnole" from the opera "La vida breve," composed by Manuel de Falla, after which Perlman discusses being "discovered" by Ed Sullivan as a teenage virtuoso, after which he attended the Juilliard School; his "age-appropriate" talent compared to now; and his work on the score of the highly acclaimed film "Schindler's List" (1993).

Finally, Roberts joins Letterman to discuss a recent New York Times piece about her "all-girl marching band" alongside NPR colleagues Nina Totenberg and Linda Wertheimer; the recent death of Congressman and Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill; his "down-to-Earth" nature and talent for handling high-pressure situations, including death threats; and his dissimilarities from Senator Bob Packwood, who allegedly kept diaries detailing his sexual harassment of various women, including many staffers.
