LAVERNE & SHIRLEY: GUINEA PIGS (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about two young working women, following their humorous adventures from the 1950s through the 1960s.
In this episode, Shirley helps Edna get ready for a big date. In return, Edna passes on an invitation to a fancy cocktail party that has a $20 per person entry fee. Laverne tells Shirley that it’s something they can’t afford. Shirley doesn’t want to stay home sorting socks and is determined to go to the party. Now, Laverne and Shirley need to figure out how to earn $40. Laverne and Shirley try to enlist Lenny and Squiggy to take them to that “secret place” where they go to earn money. Soon, they are at the Institute of Behavioral Sciences and prepared to get paid to be guinea pigs. Shirley is sent to test for a vitality project involving strange foods while Laverne handles a non-sleep study. As it turns out, Laverne’s lack-of-slumber session will end a half hour before the soiree begins. Laverne also wonders how they can possibly get ready for the party in only thirty minutes.
Later, Laverne and her fellow testers gets to actually sleep, but for only for a few seconds at a time. Meanwhile, Shirley is starved for a decent meal after having to wolf down a host of less-than-appetizing items, including “mud dumplings.” Ultimately, the two gals get through their experiments, earn $50, and head to the ritzy affair. There, Laverne struggles to stay awake as Shirley is dying for some sustenance. Accordingly, the two girls are unable to enjoy the party or meet men. A hotel security worker even thinks Laverne is drunk due to her wobbling. Later, Shirley notices two cute guys staring at them, but can’t herself to act. Then, Shirley is so famished that she goes after a cracker on the floor, right before Laverne passes out cold. Things soon go from bad to worse. As the party ends, Shirley relishes the snacks she procured as Laverne says goodbye to the man with whom she shared space under the buffet table. Includes commercials.
