LAVERNE & SHIRLEY: SUPERMARKET SWEEPS (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about two young working women, following their humorous adventures from the 1950s through the 1960s.
In this episode, Laverne and Shirley do their grocery shopping, as Laverne takes issue with many of Shirley’s selections. Laverne takes their order to the register as Shirley gets one last item. Then, Laverne is named the market’s one millionth customer. As a prize, she’s awarded three minutes of free shopping after hours on the following Friday. Meanwhile, Shirley is accused of shoplifting. Back at home, Shirley is in a funk after being left out of all the attention. When Laverne arrives, she starts to engineer how she can sell the grocery items at a markup. Laverne also starts to take food orders to help out Carmine, Lenny, and Squiggy, making Shirley feel like an even bigger loser. Laverne concedes that she and Shirley should work as a team during the supermarket giveaway.
Afterward, the girls try to add “class” to their apartment by purchasing a giant statue reminiscent of The David. When the big night arrives, Lenny, Squiggy, Carmine, and Edna show up at the market to cheer on the gals. Laverne and Shirley wear track suits so they can stuff items inside the baggy clothes, as well as their shopping basket. Ultimately, the duo become so weighed down with their goods that only two items get pushed across the finish line. Later, each blames the other for the supermarket fiasco, though both soon concede that teamwork would have led to victory. Finally, Edna agrees to buy their statue so that the girls will have some money for food. Commercials deleted.
