BOB NEWHART SHOW, THE: A DAY IN THE LIFE (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedy programs about the personal and professional life of a Chicago psychologist. In this episode, Emily is on vacation for the week and wants to dedicate the time to getting in shape. Bob’s old friend from New Orleans calls him up and invites them out to join them there for the week. Bob, in an effort to prove that he can be “spontaneous,” accepts, but Emily reminds him that he has a number of patients to see him in the next week. Emily bets that he won’t be able to resolve his appointments and get them on the plane that night, and Bob accepts the challenge. Bob tries to reschedule with Carol, but finds that his patients have conflicts incompatible with his new schedule. Mr. Carlin is already waiting for him and doesn’t agree with Bob’s plan to transfer some of his patients to another doctor. The other doctor agrees to take everyone except Mr. Carlin, with whom he has a bad history. However, Mr. Carlin is uneasy about the prospect of going a week without a session, and so asks Bob to hold all of his sessions in the coming week in a row immediately.

After meeting with Mr. Carlin, Bob sees the Swerdlows, a family which has grown unnervingly close. Mr. Carlin insists on sitting in on their session. Bob is concerned that they may be trying too hard to imitate cooperation and subsuming their hostilities; Mr. Carlin can’t stop himself from making snide remarks about the family’s excessively saccharine behavior. Bob asks Mr. Carlin to leave, but he reveals that Bob is going on vacation, prompting the family to turn on each other and necessitating that Bob calm them down. Howard tries to secure plane tickets for Bob and Emily as Bob simultaneously tries to manage his hectic schedule with Carol.

Bob and Emily go out to lunch with Howard, whereupon they learn that their flight leaves two hours earlier than expected. Bob struggles to get his appointments done on time, juggling a session with Mr. Carlin, a phone conversation with Mr. Peterson, and getting a haircut from his inebriated barber Mel. Bob very nearly manages to resolve everything and leave for New Orleans until he’s interrupted by the return of the Swerdlow family with a matter requiring his attention. Somehow Bob manages to get that under control and makes it to the airport with Emily, who is proud of him for managing to get everything under control. However, his friend calls from New Orleans to inform them that the whole thing was a prank. Bob gets mad and decides that he’s going anyway. Unbeknownst to him, the whole thing was a ploy concocted by him and Emily to get them to go on vacation. Commercials deleted.
