BOB NEWHART SHOW, THE: A HOME IS NOT NECESSARILY A HOUSE (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy programs about the personal and professional life of a Chicago psychologist.
In this episode, Emily is shopping for houses, although Bob is unwilling to move out of their apartment. Emily tries to get Bob to come look at a house with her, and they end up fighting about it. However, they make up and Bob agrees to go see the house, although he already has his mind made up that he will hate it. A real estate agent shows them around, and Bob tries not to let his affinity for the house show. He finally admits that he likes it, but still doesn’t want to buy it despite the enthusiasm of the real estate agent. Another couple comes to view the house as well, and the other agent uses the same spiel. Back at the office, Carol speaks to Bob in private and asks for a raise, acting sheepishly about the idea. She is surprised when Bob acquiesces without any fuss. The real estate agent then calls again, and Carol concocts an excuse to keep her off Bob’s back for a while.
Bob feels that he’s being pressured into buying the house. Jerry advises him to take his time with the decision, and that if he is “meant to have it” that he will. Emily visits and tells Bob they need to make a decision immediately; Bob repeats Jerry’s advice until Emily notes that another couple has made an offer. Jerry hears about the house and immediately rescinds his advice. Emily and Bob lie awake at night contemplating the purchase of the house; they decide to make a bid on it after all and Bob wonders if they made the right decision. Bob tries to think up of numerous excuses which would provide impediments to living in the new house, but Emily believes that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
The next day, Carol tells Bob that the real estate agent called and needs to arrange a meeting. Mr. Carlin overhears this and offers to help Bob with the house, believing that his job in land development could be useful. He tells Bob that he heard a rumor that a smelting plant is going up in the neighborhood, and believes that the real estate agent may be deceiving them. Bob tries to speak to Emily about his discoveries, but finds that Howard is already showing prospective buyers around their apartment in anticipation of their departure. Emily then reveals that she visited the house again and found a number of defects and problems. Shortly thereafter, the real estate agent tells them that their bid was turned down. Bob and Emily cannot disguise their joy at the news. Commercials deleted.
