Summary
One in this series of comedies about Dick and Joanna Loudon, who run a country inn in Vermont.
In the first half of this two-part episode, Dick is annoyed when George prioritizes the local birds and squirrels over much-needed repairs at the inn, and Stephanie and Michael are dejected to realize that their last several dates have been "duds." A highly scientific Cosmopolitan magazine quiz determines that their relationship is in serious peril, and they decide to observe happy couple Dick and Joanna for "clues," eventually convincing the Loudons to accompany them on a double date. Their evening on a mini-golf course quickly sours, however, as Dick and Joanna squabble over the game.
Back at the inn, a desperate Michael suggests couples counseling, and as the idea goes strongly against Stephanie's blue-blooded WASP upbringing, she agrees on the condition that they find an out-of-town doctor and use phony names. "Chuck and Dawn" soon sit down with Dr. Mary Kaiser, who is baffled by the couple's extremely shallow, image-based interest in one another. When they object to the idea of returning for future sessions, hoping that their problems would be solved in one afternoon, Dr. Kaiser declares that they are preventing one another from growing and should break up permanently. Saddened, Michael and Stephanie return to the inn and prepare to say their goodbyes – but Michael impulsively proposes marriage instead. Stephanie then accepts. Commercials deleted.
